Default Jaguar going back to straight 6

Jaguar are ditching the Ford sourced V6 and will be switching to the new Volvo straight 6 with the launch of the new XJ and S Type in 2008. Good to see they are going back to their roots. I'm assuming they will have their own version with extra power and torque. Volvo's 3.2 litre version will have 175 and 320 nm. I'm sure Jaguar would be aiming for at least 190-200kw. Hopefully Ford Oz can pick up some of the new technology for our 6. It will have the usual VCT plus it has a new type of variable valve lift technology called Cam Profile Switching which allows 2 different depths of valve lift.

Taken from June Wheels magazine.

Sounds promising, but its worrying too. In the future what is stopping Ford HQ from telling Broadmeadow to can the 4.0l and use the Volvo 6.

That won't happen for at least another half dozen years or so.

Looks like GM may be seeing the light on how good the straight six engine is.

Hmmm, an I6 mounted transversely. Interesting!

It's only 25" long!

Hmmmm, I don't know if any of you noticed but that image shows the cam & accessories drive is on the flywheel end of the motor. That will make for an interesting arrangement if the engine was located north/south...

I'm just waiting for a car company to release a car with EVC (electronic valve control). I know that BMW did this, but the car was too noisy... sounded like too much slap... still....

see and this is hy ford etc lose money, why wouldn't you just invest a lot of cash into ONE I6!

I dont see the point in having another one, ours is only 0.8L bigger, anturally makes more power aswell, I dont know what teh volvo engine is like as I have never experienced it, but ours is pretty bloody good for the cash spent on it!

A compromised straight 6. Look at the bore stroke ratios and rev limit. It will be a tall engine too.

I'm sure it got their attention. Gave the XR5 a squirt the other day and it's a fantastic car to drive (for a small/medium car). Absolutely puts the regular focus to shame (from my experience) and doesn't mind revving out to 7500rpm.

The Barra engine is only engineered for north/south mounting and rear wheel drive/AWD. It requires a totally different setup to what an east/west FWD would require. Could you imagine a Barra 190 in a FWD. Torque steer city, let alone the turbo. We don't have the capacity to make enough engines here either, and letting it be built elsewhere would have Ford want to send production to somewhere with cheap labour. Best to keep it all aussie. The Volvo engine is also extremely compact, its the same size as the 5 cylinder.
