Default every third person will have the flu

experts are saying every 3rd person you meet this winter will have the chance of giving you the flu, they are recommending that you get the vaccination, has anyone got it? are there many side effects?

I heard a story the other week suggesting that the more colds and other infections you get throughout your life, there seems to be a reduction in your propensity to cancer.

I've never had a flu shot but have thought about it now I have a daughter that plays with snot bags quite a bit. Never really warmed to the idea tbh.

The same experts are also predicting that there is a 100% chance of mortality...from something....eventually.

It's like the saying "everyone stops smoking, eventually"

I probably wont get it, hopefully my bodies defenses hold up again this year. What strains does the vaccine cover? You regularly hear from people who get the fu vaccine and weeks later they have caught some strain other strain.

Interesting I am a bit of a hypocrite in this area (thinking about previous topics on this forum, re child vaccinations which I am all for, my daughter has had all her vaccinations) But when it comes to the flu vaccine I doubt I will get it

Giving blood does have good medicinal side effects. Thats why they used to bleed people in the old days.

I had the swine flu shot last year I think. It was free at work so why not. I dont usually get the flu much anyway. But then I'm one of those people who are happy to get sick and develop the antibodies naturally for things like colds and flus.

I'm not a medical expert by any means but I believe vaccines are made from the offending virus and "can" cause short term side effects in some people similar to the disease itself. But this is only a very small percentage and the majority of people are fine.

This is not true. The vaccine can give you some short-term flu like symptoms, but can not give you the flu virus.

I had my shot about 3 weeks ago and apart from a sore arm for a few days I had no flu like symptoms. Normally I dont get the flu shot but this year I am moving and will be sharing a house with more people in it so id rather reduce the risk of having to take time off work.

Every vaccine gives you a small amount of the actual virus/illness. This allows your immune system to give it a good boot out the door and increase your immunity to such an illness.

I've never had the 'flu', so I'd like to think I'm lucky. Every summer I get a cold though...damn air conditioning :(

I had the shot a few days ago, no side effects at all. So did my wife and two little ones.
It's free for at risk people like children, the elderly asthmatics etc...

I get the flu not matter what I do. So, I'll pass this year. Not really into getting vaccinated for everything..just the essentials. I figure if I get the flu a few times a decade, it's just gonna make my immune system stronger.

Don't like vaccines though I understand the theory ....

an alternative - Dr. Danny's cure all tea :
chopped / crushed garlic (real stuff - not the chinese rubbish) x 1 or 2 cloves
ditto ginger about 1 or 2 cubic cm.
Simmer in water for 10 minutes, allow to cool, add lemon juice and honey to taste, then drink the juice. Repeat a few times. Will knock out most bugs and anyone you breathe on.

There's another one very similar to that, except it has tabasco sauce and paprika or cayenne pepper (can't remember which one), it tastes like absolute...you know, but works a treat...

This is sort of true; there are different types of vaccines, the flu vaccine is an inactivated virus, meaning it has been altered in the lab so that it 'looks' the same to your immune system, but is not pathogenic, i.e. your body will prepare antibodies so if/when you are exposed to the 'real' flu you will be better equipped to fight it off, but the vaccine itself won't give you the flu.
To the OP, take all the opinions from armchair experts on the internet with a grain of salt, if you have questions you're better off asking your GP.
Cheers,
Matt.

The worst side effect you're likely to get from a flu shot is a sore arm. The risk of a rare allergic reaction is far less than the risk of severe complications from influenza.

My employer gives everyone the option to be vaccinated every year.

I do it for the lolly-pop afterwards

I work in Healthcare and I get it every yr, (although I missed last yr) it is free to us, I am getting mine tomorrow, I have never had any effect's afterward's.
It does effect everybody differenlty though, some people do have some cold like symptom's but they only last a day or two and they are not enough to make you bed ridden etc.

I think some people here are mistaking the "Flu" with the "common cold" if you got the Flu, you would know it as you would be in a very bad way for a long time.
This is where the misconception comes from that people think when they get the Flu injection but still get sick, as it only makes you imune from the Flu, you still can get the common cold and cold like sympton's, like I said each individual is different.

I get it every year free through work as a teacher.

My only side effect is hysterical laughter.. no joke.

Since I have been having the shot (3-4 years now) I can honestly say that if I do get a cold it hits me a lot less, I recover faster and it doesn't flare up my asthma as much.

Then again... I have had a jab for almost everything several times over now. I think I'm going ok in terms of immunity to the nasties floating around ;).

Ditto.

To clarify further any time your immune system encounters a foreign protein (an antigen) for the first time it will respond to produce cells that directly kill or generate antibodies against anything that carries this antigen (the primary response). A component of this response is to generate immunological 'memory' such that when the same antigen is encountered again another response can be elicited (the secondary response) and which is vastly more efficient.

The idea behind vaccination is to generate a potential to elicit a secondary response to antigens of organisms that can cause severe disease such that when your body encounters them in nature they are efficiently neutralised and killed.

Regarding side effects, there are potential side effects to ANY medical intervention and these must be weighed up against the risk of NOT having the intervention. In the event of side effects occurring take comfort in knowing that medical practitioners know what to do about them. It's unlikely that you would get the same supports from advocates of alternative medicine.

god you aren't wrong lol! i was cringing reading the ingredients!

i've had the flu once, and i had suspected swine flu last year. i was sick for 3 weeks and i wanted to die. i figure, i hope, i have an immunity to it now.

and yeah, why don't people cover their mouths when they cough/sneeze? should be a big media campaign about basic hygene. that would be of better benefit than offering injections.

Of course the experts recommend to get the flu vaccine, they are payed by the pharmaceutical companies to recommend this lol. The pharmaceutical industry is a big industry turning over massive amounts of $$$$$ and for every flu shot you get their stocks go up and up and up.

I would ask your doctor if he can show you an independent study that proves there is any benefit from the flu vaccine you are going to receive.

And I would never ever give my children the flu vaccine.

new study verifies mercury in flu shots is toxic
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-relea...118432874.html

Swedish study links swine flu vaccine to narcolepsy
http://www.thelocal.se/32878/20110329/

Also when the next deadly flu pandemic arises the current vaccines will most likely provide no benefit in preventing the spread of a mutated killer influenza strain. Well unless the same pharmaceutical companies behind the flu vaccines actually create the deadly flu strain hehehe

I have a slightly easier version if anyone is interested.

Streight Scotch (for the sore throat) and extra hot Nando's get you back on your feet quickly (the extra hot Nandos for me is the hardest as I am not big on hot foods)

You could just eat an orange a day. My old man does that, and since he started years ago, no colds or flu's. I assume it has something to do with the vitamin c. Whether the vit c has anyone relationship I have no idea, but I do know he used to get colds and the odd flu like thing like most people, but since eating oranges daily, he does not.

Some other things that kill flu -

Vitamin B - most people are deficient most of the time.

Zinc - ditto, and copper water pipes give your drinking water a little copper dose each day which should be balanced out by zinc but often isn't. Take zinc pills rather than licking a galvanized trailer. Men can be zinc deficient if they frequently empty their manbags.

OT - if you suffer from piles or mouth ulcers, get into some Epsom Salts. The right dose is about as much as will stick to a moistened little-finger tip jammed into the box. Do that a couple of times. You don't need much or you'll get the runs.
The magnesium in Epsom Salts is the good stuff that you lack.
