So I went and had some wisdom teeth out...

Well today, I sit here, home from work and sore as buggery contemplating what made me go and get my two left wisdom teeth removed! I mean sure the gum played up occasionally but christ this is painful! Didn't feel much while he was doing and it was fairly straight forward (took less than an hour and didn't need any major cutting/digging, teeth just went straight out) but about an hour after I left the anesthetic wore off and blimey it hurt. I had to drive and see my sister to go and buy the painkillers because I couldn't talk... on the way back I was in severe pain (couldn't take the codeine before leaving cause it makes you sleepy).

For about ten minutes I was in pure hell: I was in blazing agony and literally, no ****, surrounded by Camrys of various models all refusing to speed up and merge. Then came the two diesel shitheaps blowing smoke everywhere and climing a hill at 20 km/h.: :togo:

If there's one time to get a speeding fine, it was yesterday! I can safely say I've seen hell fellas and its not pretty. Try and avoid going there!

Anyone else has their wisdoms out?

I had them all out in one go, but under general (-:
Came home and got back into things, dribbled a bit of blood though.
No pain, only the worry of ripping the stitches out when brushing my teeth.

Soon enough you wont know that you've had them out though.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth cut out about a year ago and i remember it hurt like hell. I have no idea how you could drive after, they give a hell of a lot of pain killers and numbing injections!!!

Did you get to keep the teeth? I got to keep mine (they're all drilled in and a bit mangled!!!) now got a bag of EIGHT of my adult teeth that i've had removed over the years.

Buy lots of yogo and soup and take it easy! Mmmmm yogo...

Was eating solids the next day.

Back at work the day after.

Next to no pain.

What does it cost to get wisdom teeth removed?? I have never had any major dental work done but have heard from colleagues that teeth removal costs a fortune

I'm hoping the bleeding will stop entirely soon - its a very slight seeping at the moment, lots of dribble tho. I had to put a towel on my pillow last night after I work up in a pool of bloody dribble. :

I had mine out under local so I was conscious the whole time - the top one took less than 5 minutes to come out and the bottom took him about 20 minutes to 1/2 hour. The reason I could drive was that I was only given a local and no sedatives or anything like that but driving when you're in severe pain is quite difficult and you tend to have NO patience or tolerance for slow idiots.

Only cost me $330 to have the two out and so far I've spent $30 on Nurofen Plus, antibiotics and some gauze pads. It can cost a lot more depending on how difficult the removal is of said teeth - mine weren't impacted and the only reason I had them out was the lower left kept rubbing/cutting the gum around it and last week it swelled up for the second time (the first time I had problems I had a serious infection in my gum). Basically the bottom left wasn't fully erupted meaning one corner of it wasn't fully out of the gum line. The top one wasn't causing grief but removing just the lower one and keeping the top one can be very painful and make your mouth feel odd. My right teeth, as far as I know, are fine and have fully erupted.

Some people have to have full on surgery to have their wisdoms removed because they need to a) put them under a general and b) cut into their gum and possibly jawbone to extract. Sometimes they even grow sideways. Thankfully mine grew UP else I'd probably be in a lot more pain!

I should've got Nandos on monday night - I really want it right now!

I had all mine taken out in one go. I copped an infection though, on the left upper jaw. Got put on anti-biotics. I was given a prescription for Panadeine Forte but they did absolutely nothing to calm the pain. Neurofen was the only thing that worked. I found it to be the best for toothache. After that, all was well. If it wasn't for the infection, I don't think I would have had any dramas at all. I know a few people who have had them all out at once and by the end of the day they were fine.

Anyhoo, I hate dentists with a passion!! Lol I was meant to go yesterday morning but I rang them about ½ an hour before I was meant to go and changed the appt for another one in 3 weeks time. I do this all the time. Once I'm there I'm fine. I can relax and be calm. It all gets done and everybody's happy. My problem is the nerves beforehand and having the courage to actually go.

Wow, some different experiences from my own there on different levels of severity.

Sounds like yours came out relatively easily and weren't too much of a problem so you're likely to ahve a quicker recovery than i experienced.

My four took over an hour to remove, and i was consious and awake the whole time, lots of pushing, drilling and scraping LOL but most of the pain i experienced was over the next 2 days or so.

In a way, you're lucky as you have one side you can chew on!!

Oh if you have to get them done you have to get em done. I don't want to scare you or anything but what went on with mine was relatively simple, apparently there are a few other risks but the risk of complication in such a removal is less than 2%.

Did I mention the dentist dropped one of my teeth and it went flying onto the floor

When I was younger and had braces the orthodontist ordered X-rays and said my wisdoms were impacted and all had to come out by the time I was 16.
I never bothered going to a dentist, until last year for a general check up and clean, some 8 years after my braces came off.
The dentist said my wisdoms have corrected themselves and are no longer impacted, so they can stay.

I had 8 teeth taken out once (all my wisdom teeth plus others - was going to have my jaw broken and reset) Getting the teeth taken out wasn't too bad (was knocked out a the time) so came to was driven home and was fine the next day - although I did swallow a bit of blood during the op which was not good as I found out. The jaw op was very painful though - 6 hour op very messy

:S I'm thinking I may need some out. My bottom left is not completely impacted, been like that for 2 odd years, every now and then the gum gets swollen, and sometimes I can taste blood from that area.

I had my 4 wisdom teeth & 2 other teeth removed at the same time a few years ago, I made sure that I was put under for it (I freak out at the dentist at the best of times) but I was off work for a week because of it & got the most awesome bruise that went all over my cheeks, chin and neck.

Wisdom teeth is no fun at all.

Now i was crazy stupid or crazy brave depends on your take and got all 4 pulled at once under local only. One of them took 3/4ds of an hour.

Bleed for about a week, couldnt really eat solids and it looked like id been hit in the face with a golf club. No fun at all i didnt mind dentists until then, now i hate them with a vengance.

Some people have a good recovery though and i hope yours goes well.

Yes and no. 3 of them weren't really that painful when being removed but 1 was agony. And the infection afterwards didn't help. The infection was where I had the freak wisdom tooth cut out. It had 3½ roots and caused alot of issues when they were trying to take it out. First they broke it trying to remove it then it was just all downhill from there LOL. Neurofen did the job though and it all cleared up but yeah, as if it wasn't bad enough that I went there petrified and then to have to go through that and the 2 weeks of infection. Doesn't help with following visits lol.

i was lucky, the roots were straight, so they came straight out.
not too much pain, bit of a headache, and a day off work after each one.
i got private health insurance before getting it done, just got some medibank extras thing.
i got about half back of what i paid.
so that wasnt too bad.

An individual tooth, pulled in a dentist's chair, costs about $100 in total. Prob $110 with GST.

But if you have day surgery (i.e. go to hospital, get knocked out for the procedure)... well, let's just say if you dont have private cover then dont even ask the question lol. I suspect aneathetist fees would have three zeros on the end of it alone. Then bed/room, plus $$$ for the operation itself... etc etc.

This brings back memories......

Had the 2 left ones out first a few years ago. Came out no worries, got stiched up and drove home after going to the Chemist to get whatever pills were written on the paper. I spoke like I was paraletic so I just pointed to my jaw and showed the lady my 2 teeth in the bag and she knew what I needed without looking at the paper.

After a week the other side had to be removed. Boy... the top one slid out from sheer fear I think, the bottom one needed to be sliced into 4 after almost an hr of tugging and yanking. The roots were hooked at almost a 90 degree angle...

No pain, drove home. Just a sore neck from this dentist trying his best...

Heaps of people i know are getting them taken out lately... I've got mine and they fitted in just perfectly. Once you've got them, and your teeth are all sweet - does that mean i'll have no future problems and need them removed or ?

I had top 2 wisdom teeth removed several years ago, was in next to no pain...got it done under local anasthetic. A couple of hours later, I was back to normal...some have it luckier than others I guess!

Not always - they can cause problems down the track, and the older you get, the worse they become and the harder they are to come out. Apparently your jaw can even shatter if you're say 40+ and other nasty ****. IMO I'd get it checked out, especially if you're in your teens because the longer you leave them, the more 'embedded' and deeply rooted they become.

I remember when I had mine out a few years back, under general anaesthetic. I woke up in a hospital bed with a mouth full of cotton wool and almost hitting panic thinking "what the hell? Have I been in a car accident and smashed my face up??" before I remembered what was going on and why I was in there.

Nurse was kind enough to pump some sort of amazing substance in my body and asked if I was still in pain. The brain clicked that if I said yes, I would get more (even though I wasn't in pain). My god that was wonderful whatever they were putting into me!!!

Then the following week I laid in bed watching movies & sleeping while dosed up on painkillers for no apparent reason.

What a wonderful experience it was Although, having to eat mushy food for the week was the worst part :( The night dad bought home some KFC Potato & Gravy, I was a happy man!

i felt more pain removing the 3 then afterwards
only got min pain relief hence why it hurt a tad when removing
your mouth will thank you for removing them trust me on that ;)

Eeek! My dentist told me that my wisdom teeth don't look like they will come up, but if they do no way do I want the dentist to touch em now! That sounds like hell! Poor bugger! Hope the pain goes away real soon

well its time for me to have my wisdom tooth out, top right tooth. only the one (lucky) going under general on monday to have him out and having another tooth pulled (bottom front incisor) as i have recently had braces put on which requires it to be pulled. sounds f'd but its for the best.
