Default Anyone attempted the Beep Test?

After reading a similar thread on another forum, I'm curious to see who here on AFF has done the beep test, and how you went?

I haven't had a crack at it but am looking at using it to get my fitness up over the next couple of months.

Yeah in 2007 we had to do it for PE, that was the last time I did it, .

Beep, beep, beep, beepbeepbeep start level 1.....

You have to run I think 25m in between the beeps, if it beeps before you're over the line, you're out.

They gradually get faster and faster.

Now that you say that I think I did it at school once too, but wouldn't have a clue what I got. Doubt it was anything impressive haha.

It is a 20m distance that you have to cover. When I first tried it about 6 months ago I couldn't get past level 5. Now with a bit of practise I can get halfway through level 8. Still nowhere as good as some of my fit friends who can get to level 14 or 15.

The Beep test is a good way of improving fitness and has different levels to reach, dependant on fitness/age. There is a lot on information available on the web.

You can go to a gym, which would be worthwhile when starting out. But if you want to train by yourself it is very easy. All you need to do is;
  • Purchase the CD or download it from the net.
  • You will need a boom box (stereo) or similar - I put it onto my MP3 and listen to it while running.
  • Find a level area of 20m in length - I use the local cricket pitch.
  • Turn on the CD/MP3 and listen to the 'beeps'.
  • The pace starts off slowly (quick walk) and increases at each level (beep).
  • There is a technique also, as you constantly turn every 20m.
  • Don't overdo it the first time, just remember the level you reach and try and improve on it the next time.
  • Once you get used to it, you will surprise yourself how quickly you improve.
This is just a brief overview, with more information available with research. The usual health and medical checks may be required prior to any physical training.

thats really good advice

Ive only had to do it the once and now avoid it like the plage

I am a big unit but needed to get to 9:6 for a job in personal training I got to 10:4 before missing 2 shuttels and running my self out so it should have been fine but on the assesment I was really pushing hard from mid 8's and it was all I could do not to vomit green stuff after compleating the 9:6 shuttel (Wouldnt have done my man brand any good)

in terms of using it to monitor your progress I found it works well but is hard on knees and ankels

Tips I found worked for me

dont try and take off fast use inertia as your freind other wise youll run out of puff early

have a shuttle buddy i found it worked well to pace off

and if your serious about doing it proply have some one monitor and ride you like a second hand donky

My daughter has just had to get to 7 for the QLD police recruits. I got to about 3 and was buggered.

8.5 was the best i could ever do a few yrs back now.... I struggle to get 8 now.

Beware the technique of the beep test!

Busted ankles, shredded knees..... you name it! If you are looking at coming back into fitness, there are less invasive ways of doing it before attempting the beep test, which really doesn't do too much other than guage a level a cardivascular fitness, not an overall fitness indicator.

Swimming, and/or using an elliptical cycle place little stress on the bodys joints and tendons, and can be a more gradual transition. A much more preferable choice!

The beep test is used though, by agencies or oganisations as a quick indicator, but the results cant be taken as condusive to a level of overall fitness.

As part of a military fitness program I have seen blokes in their thirties clocking levels 16+..........

Personally though, I hate it.

Done the beep test many a time, usually it was in the process of getting into the coppers in '96. Pain in the arrse though, I wouldnt use it to get fit.

As a way to get fit it cant be used... good as an indicator as you go along yes, but not suitable for training really.
Interval training in a straight line would be more appropriate.

I'd be only using it as a guide to track your progress.

HIIT (high intensity interval training) or Crossfit would be my picks to boost your fitness.

I last did it school, i got to around 12~ (used it to train for state athletics/cross country)

Now id be flat out making 6..

Use HIIT training, works so much better than continuous training like the beep test.

Before I started smoking, around the age of 13, I got around a 16 at school. Was up there with the top athletes in the class. Don't think I'd get over a 5 now.

Back in school I got about 8.6 or so. I hated it and never want to do it again.
I'm assuming I'd get around 8 these days anyway.

I used to get about 7 or 8 in school. Earlier this year I had to get 9.6 with only a few weeks notice. Managed to run 10 something here in Adelaide and got 9.6 quite comfortably in Darwin (20 degrees hotter at the time). The only cardio i do is hiit.

I am at a reasonable level of fitness and can achieve a level 9.1

I applied to join the police force and they require a 10.1

I find it quite absurd as most of the officers I see certainly dont have the appearance of being able to achieve remotely close to that.

Used to do it once a week until about 2 months ago. Highest I got was 11.2, but averaged around 10.5. Now I know there are better methods of training!!

Have not done it in a loooong time, about 7-8 years, don't intend on taking it back up anytime soon, just the beeps drive me nuts, i'll go for a couple of Km run any day.

I have to do it as part of my job every 2 months (Referee), we have to get to 8, men to 10, i just run to 10 and stop, but i think i could get to mid 11, i think people struggle with it mentally.

I had to do it for PE and footy training when I was 16-17. It was about 1000x easier doing in on cement than it was doing it on grass, 8.4 on grass and over 10 on cement. I'd like to do it again, I've got a CD laying around somewhere with a copy I downloaded from the net. I reckon I could do much better now than when I was younger because I'm fitter than the lazy gluttonous slob I was when I was 16.

Last time I did it I got about 6.3, which for my age and health is terrible. I was doing it in Dunlop Volleys at the time, which was a bad idea.

I used to have to do one monthly when I played footy for the bears when I was a kid, and again during my time playing rugby union... I don't think I ever want to hear that sound again.

I could probably do better now as I'm quite fit from gym and riding pushies.
