Help the farmers - Drought Action Day - 15th Feb

On friday 15th Feb, Safeway and Woolies are giving away an entire days profits to farmers (4 out of 5 of which are still in drought) – all you need to do is shop at any Safeway or Woolies on February 15th and all of the profits will go to the Country Women’s Association for distribution to farming families in need.

Last year, Australians raised over $4.7m - let's try and crack $5m this year.

Haha, last year it was held on a Tuesday which is always the quietest day of the week in supermarkets.

Closely followed by Fridays.


How big hearted of them. Giving the "profit" from one of the slowest days.

While you're shopping, buy local too - do this as often as you can, not just the charity day! Most fruit and veg now shows where it's from - saw kiwi fruit from Italy last time I was there!!

Want to help the farmers, buy local produce! Buy it from your local market gardener or grocer and get it fresher and healthier too...

They need to give back more to the farmers ... they already rob from them in the first place as it is.

Have a look at meat prices next time you are in there ... and then compare that to what the farmer gets per kg at the moment at the sales ... it's pathetic.

Exactly, then they try to look like the good guys with nothing more then publicity for themself. I'm sure the farmers will except the money but wouldn't it feel like a slap in the face. Hope some of them reject it publicly.

I will buy up big on my non perishables tomorrow. I need to do my annual cleaning product and other high value stuff so will make that effort.

Meat, fruit and veg I won't though as I get that stuff from my little independent shop who look after the farmers better the other 364 days of the year. Not to mention much better quality.

i know this is a good thing for the farmer but what about the industry that supports the farmers

i currently work in the in the farming industry building equipment and we are struggling just as hard as the farmers

just a wondering would anyone be willing to help the other industries out it is not just the farmers struggling....... i know that there has been quite a few manufacturers go under here in vic because of the drought

Does this include profits from Safeway Petrol Outlets ? IMO It should. I always shop at Safeway but i will have to do a big shop tomorrow just for this cause.

Maybe they can double the donation by having the top execs throw in their weekly pay packets too! They get their million a year before anything left over is counted as profit...

yep thats true, then they're the ones who turn around and say to myself and the other suckers that work for woolworths, we need to stick to our budget, reduce your staff hours by 3 staff members a day (3 bakers employed and only 1 to do entire days production through the week : ) and they wonder why their staff are telling them to shove the job up their a55es.

a 45hr minimum week (sometime 55hrs) working every weekend and doing nights, then days, then nights agian for $600 a week after tax.

screw that, i cant wait till i finish tafe and become a web designer.

Who do you work for & what type of equipment do you manufacture?

I work in an Ag Machinery business & we're having a ripper year so far, even through out the drought we did alright, last year was the only year we didn't make alot of $$$..

Spot on, I work at a small pig farm and prices have dropped to $1.80 kg for a

pig, yet the price of pork/bacon has risen due to the drought. :

If you want to help the farmers buy local produce.

It interesting that farmers are selling produce to Woolworths/Safeway/Coles at a similiar price as too what they were years ago, yet the cost of everything in Woolworths/Safeway/Coles has increased by a reasonable amount (maybe at the same rate there profit has increased ;) )

I work at woolies, i seriously dont think it is the 'whole' days profit. Going of what my store does in a days/weeks trade and how many stores there are it doesnt seem to add up. My store does about 600k per week there for roughly 90k, so if you work it out it doesnt seem to add up last year 4.7 million was raised. But good on them for doing this or store got right behind it

I had an arguement with my missus over this this morning she was trying to tell me that Friday was the busiest day I said no freaking way its quiet. They are the worst company I have ever worked for.

Thats the other question is it really the whole profits knowing safeway/woolies and the way they work I seriously doubt it.

i'll always buy independant until they pay the farmers what their produce is worth, and stop with all the cheapo overseas imports. my cousin own s a pigery and hes doin it tough while safeway, ect import the sheet. publicity stunt.

yeh i buy direct off the farmer for what it is worth and it is still a crap load cheaper than what the big name supermarkets sell it for
