Mate you really need to get whatever it is about your dislike for me off your chest. Throwing insults instead of facts is what inferior people who have nothing sensible to say resort to. So just make a single post with every derogatory remark you can muster and then move on to something more constructive. Your comments are not clever, just saturated in vitriol, which is quite embarrassing really.

The Falcons still looked to have a mortgage on the race - but it rained giving the lighter more nimble Holden Dealer Team Holden's the slight edge that they needed. Holden dealer Team driver Peter Brock took the race - it was one of the "longest" finishes on record. Brock a lap ahead of second placed John French (Falcon), who in turn was a lap ahead of the Doug Chivas E49 Charger, with another Charger and two Torana's each a further lap down on the previous car.

The wet conditions and greasy track took its toll of cars. Apart from Bond, another four Torana's slid off the track and Ford driver Fred Gibson tipped his Falcon on its roof just before Skyline - almost half-way between Bill Brown's two spectacular crash sites of years before.

1972 marked the end of yet another stage in the development of the race - the last event to be contested over 500 miles.

they were lucky :

And to really stir up the children. The day is coming where Holden and Ford will have to unite and work together (they already jointly own some suppliers and shared infrastructure). Probably not to the extent of sharing platforms, but in other areas. Its the only way they can take on the other big world manufacturers. If they continue to fight against one another they will slowly slip into history, replaced by a Ford US world car (Taurus anyone) and a GM Front wheel drive gas guzzler. Remember a few months this year Falcon slipped to 4th place on sales, that will only get worse and Holden will follow them down)

Lastly for those who say the VE is ugly. You had better start getting used to it as those who have seen the Orion report it looks similar in SOME respects (wheels in the corners, flared guards, glass house).

It may be better than a BF (it'd want to be) but is it as good as the rest of the cars on the list? I say no.

I fail to understand where people come up with terrible misconceptions like this. I have driven a VE SV6 and found what you are saying completely false. I found it smooth and quiet with plenty of torque down low, as an unbiased person I generally couldn't fault it.
I think you will also find that most engines produce their max power close to redline, so what else is new?
Its not a terrible misconception but a truth it is horrible and noisey. Because the VZ/VEs i have driven this has been the case. Noisey, woeful power delivery compared to the BA/BF in 4spd guise.

How can a car built in 2007 win a COTY award with a 4spd auto...... :

In this company i would have voted for the Auiron V6

I drive both daily around town and over distances. The 180Kw V6, 4 speed Omega holds its own against the 4 speed Ford. They are different cars. But VE is NOT woeful.

Wheels in the corners? Geez I hope Orion wasn't gonna end up as a tricycle.
Flared guards? Most cars these days have flared guards. VE has the ugliest (at the front).
VE Glasshouse looks ok.
VE rear end is not easy on the eye, and the front looks like something from 2002.

Well you are either being extremely over critical or imagining things, the VE SV6 I drove ran perfectly smoothly and quietly, absolutely not even close to the way you are describing it. I have driven BA/BF falcons and in terms of engine NVH between the two there is barely anything in it.
Power delivery felt fine to me and was strong across the rev range, so I don't know what you're harping on about there either.
One thing that really impressed me with the VE was the silky smooth idle, you need to look at the tacho to tell if the engine is running and you could put a full glass of water on top of the running engine and not spill a drop.

I probably get flamed to hell with what I am going to say but to hell with it.

I find it appalling with some of the derogatory comments on the VE.
The BA/BF Falcon is an excellent car and its an excellent car for our local industries. And so is the new Commodore our local car manufacturing is almost nil in this country and including other manufacturers of other stuff like food and clothes etc etc. The imports are killing our local manufacturing structure in this country I do my damndest to buy locally manufactured goods like clothes and food etc etc. Without Holden what would Ford be like? Another Camry ? or some other FWD white good?. Its the competiton between Holden and Ford that keeps our local manufacturing going. And Jobs take a look at Mitsubishi in oz they are falling down at a rapid rate and it means less jobs for people. I don't mind the odd Holden vs Ford until it gets really childish and stupid. I don't give a rats behind about COTY but I do feel happy when one of our own local manufacturer wins Ford of Holden. Sure Holden won this year but it does not mean that Ford wont win in another year. It would be a very bleak and sad day for Australia when it comes to 100% imported cars and no local car manufacturer. Also comes to this question people say the VE is too european I cant for the life of me understand what an 100% Aussie designed car looks like. Since 90% of cars that are built here uses other manufacturers designs for their own.

just my 2 cents really.

Anyway carry on.

unfortunately, i believe it was designed overseas...european (looks like a bloody bmw) imo they spent a billion dollars importing the opal, and re-badging it with holden, they admitted them selves that they kept the opal model name "omega". glad to see that holdens advertising budget is put to good use as a "bribe" to wheels to allow them the opertunity to take out the "prestigious award" of coty. bring on pcoty and the better designed bf "force" and "f6" range.

Love the Rick Kelly comment..

I thought wheels mag were in bed with Holden anyway..

The VE may have some better features then the BF, but surely there is another car thats better than the VE... Standard ones are ugly, (HSV's look pretty good).

There is no way i would prefer a VE over a BF, or ED anyday.

If anyone didnt think the VE would be COTY..... : .
All new model commo's have won!
Ford WILL get their act together on the next round of model.
Ford will release new model next year!
The model will be better than the VE and BF series 47.
The Falcon will win COTY '09
Everyone will grow up!

Didnt two models in a row win COTY for Ford recently?
Memories are short.....the VE may be ugly but setle down a bit! The next generation of Falcon will be better........beleive it or not.

I'd say that going by Falcons' success in COTY it's next due for a win in 2041 :

As a new member to this site and a proud owner of a Ford model T i'm disappointed at the level of criticism towards a car that is obviously a superior product. If the VE wins world car of the year later this year i can only imagine the "bad blood" on this site then.

Be glad Holden won and not some rice burner. I guarantee that the Orion designers have had they're bar raised and this can only be good for Australian made 4 door sedan fans both blue and red.

If it was such a superior product, not 1 Falcon, Toyota, mitsubishi, BMW, Merc, would ever be sold again in Australia. Dont get caught up in the 'Best car in the world' 'trillion dollar R&D' hype from adverstising. Holden have the best marketing division of any compnay in Aust I am sure. I have driven it, passengered in it and is as good as a BF. Problem is thats there trump card. Imagine what Ford are bringing out next time round!

If this model car beats what comes out of Europe, on the worlds judging stage, I will tattoo 'Holdens are fully sik bro' on my forehead. It shouldnt have in COTY but wheels mag will support aussie grown first which is wrong.....but understandable

Won't happen. The top ten overall from a field of 28 are:

Audi Q7
Audi TT
Citroen C4 Picasso
Citroen C6
Fiat Grande Punto
Jaguar XK
Lexus LS 460
Mercedes CL
MINI
Suzuki SX4 / Fiat Sedici

Although they are still in the race for the design section.
