There's no such thing, it's frigging sliced banana cake. They call it bread to remove the guilt factor. Once again, there's a stark contrast between mass produced and home made banana "cake".

Likewise with Carrot cake. It sounds like it might have a hint of something healthy in it, but it tastes ordinary and packs more calories than most other cakes. A slice of Carrot cake at Muffin Break weighs in at about 3100kj, while the Vanilla Slice is a much lower 2200kj. Then there is the cream bun at Bakers Delight (only found at a few outlets) for a mere 1600kj. You can almost eat one and convince yourself you’re on a diet.

I tend to avoid the pies that come in the foil like that - cant recall a good one but not come across it too often either.
8 dollars is steep too. Some of the pies and pasties we devoured in NZ were definitely worthy of praise. They know what they are doing over there - north and south |

Couple of weeks ago, I was in Jericho, Qld. For those who don't know, its somewhat east of Barcaldine.
Called into the Coffee Shop, with a Bakery expert. Our own Cav, the biggest pie/cake guts on AFF. Here he bought a home made Beef Pie, made by the Ladies who ran this establishment. Now this 'Rats Coffin' was huge, on the face of the argument it appeared to be of regular circumference, however this 'Maggot Sack' was deep at least 70mm deep. He consumed it in three bits and spent the next fortnight telling everyone we came across in Western Qld about how good the Pies are in Jericho........ However, just last week, Cav pronounced that the Goomari Bakery was the best Cake shop in his memory.

Made a batch of chunky steak pies for the local airport firies today for lunch. I was quite nervous because they love good food and have no hesitation in passing harsh judgement if it's not up to their high standards.
Pies, veggies, baked smashed potatoes and lashings of meaty gravy were piled on to rather large plates, they sat down and it was silent for over five minutes with just the occasional nodding of a head here and there. The fire commander broke the silence as he broke into a sweat with a barrage of swear words then muttered "geeze that's a good pie". All the others just nodded and kept eating. All of the plates were cleaned up, two of which got a lickover as well. I ended up getting further positive feedback - was asked when I'm coming back to make more pies ![]()

Baking has been a mixed bag for our family over coronatime.
The Mrs set us up very well early on with 3 months of supplies (we have to isolate as of medicals) and the baking was good. Tea cake, Chocolate cake (the kids used this for currency when in primary), single cup choc puddings, delicious loaves, apple and cinnamon loaf, vanilla slice, apple pie (with our own apples), lemon butter, peach turnover desert etc. She loves to bake. The family carrot cake recipe is insane. Then our brutally efficient little german oven, blew up. There was no way we're getting in a technician to wire in a new one with the corona risks and our conditions for now, so things have been getting creative. Microwave baking wasn't a complete success. But she did some really nice bread rolls and mini tea-cakes in the slow cooker. We fired up a stove top on the wood fireplace which showed a bit of promise and gave a nice cup of tea. Now we've had a portable oven delivered, the $89 special, round clear glass with the heating unit on top looking suspiciously like one of Hitler's UFOs. So I call the oven 'the Hannebrau'.* It works pretty well, and she's happy with it for now, cooking up really nice potato wedges with dinner, and more good things to come. *The internet taught me all about Hitler's UFOs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_UFOs

I really dislike pies advertised as 'meat pies' only with Mince in them. Chunks of steak in them only or just call them minced meat pies.

It gets confusing when people from the UK sometimes refer to fruit mince as “mincemeat”.
I don’t think anyone has reviewed a (fruit) mince or treacle tart on this thread, yet. |

I'm a big fan and usually purchase my fruit mince during the off season (now) at much lower prices than the festive season. This stuff keeps for ever on the shelf and can be used for future festival pastry wheels etc. Glad it was brought to my attention.

Back in Wang again (Vic. not QLD. GasOLane) today, thought I would try a new bakery and with a name like "Wangaratta Best Bakery" it tempted me.
Lots of nice looking cakes on display and a great looking hot food bar. I bought 2 steak mince pies and an apple turnover (lastest addiction) Pies were OK and flaky with the mince a little bland and dry. Like I said it was OK but with 5 other bakeries in Wangaratta alone, this wouldn't be my first choice here next time. ![]() I'll save the apple turnover for afternoon tea. ![]()

If you need to put that in your business name, instead of allowing your product to speak for itself, there's probably a reason for it!

Do people still eat Kitchener buns? Can you still get them?
Not that I can actually eat them being as dairy intolerant as I am, but I do remember them leaving you in a diabetic coma once you've consumed one. ![]() ![]()

Next important subject for discussion and consumption.
Name your favorite drive through bakery please. Yes, they do exit in most states of Oz.

How about weighing cakes? I’ve never done it before last weekend but I was curious about the small Chelsea bun I bought from the bakery. 250 grams. It was a decent dessert after my steak and mushroom pie.
