Some people just don't understand the joy of salvaging a wreck and restoring it yourself. It's a good feeling, especially when it fires up for the first time!! Hopefully we'll see it restored one day. Good luck to the new owner.

I have a customer who restore's old classics for a living, I've seen him rebuild many a rusty classic and they look mint when they leave.. Ive seen him fabricate qtr's to suit old coupes and painstainkingly put hours and hours into it. So good luck to the winning bidder and hope the chequebook is deep.

But as we all know most don't have the skills or the funds to finish from this condition Itll either be a beat up,some drunk knob bidding for bragging rights down the pub ,and renegs the deal ,or some other non funded person But if the winning bidder comes thru, wait for all the other nearly dead GTs to magically appear and ask similar money Ill wait in earnest for the relisting |

Im not sure about the entire bidding activity. If you have a look at the bidders they appear as related users. eg
e***e y***d n***g p***x d***d g***i z***y etc etc and goes on in the same sort of bidder configuration. If you search for any of these bidders there is no history of them. This looks very suspicious. Maybe its legit but to me it looks the hallmarks of a fraud. E bay can harbor unscrupulous sellers. I have come across some of these sellers that have ripped me off. |

I'm no expert on XR GT's (XW's are my scene) but did XR's come with auto transmission? From one of the ebay photo's it appears as though there is a 'wide' brake pedal i.e auto transmission, also can anyone see the clutch pedal? Maybe an XR expert can clarify.

Not sure if this is saying that it was Australias first 4 speed manual, or that they only came in a 4 speed manual? I remember reading somewhere that Ford strangely raced one of the GT's with 3 speed autos at Bathurst one year, but I think that might have been the XT? Quote:

So if all XR GT's were manual transmission, what's with the wide brake pedal (i.e. auto transmission) and where's the clutch pedal?
I'm thinking a barge-poll and this 'XR GT' go hand in hand. "Non-reclaimable" rings alarm bells as it isn't clear from the seller what they actually mean. Oh well it's only $8,300 and if you say it fast enough it doesn't sound half as bad. |

the gtho's were in class d - up to $4500 and the gt auto was in class e - over $4500 maybe a leg problem necessitated the auto, or he had an xw gt auto sitting in his driveway and thought "let's go racing" |

If you look at the picture of the engine bay you can see the clutch master cylinder.

I'd say it's genuine.. The brake pedals correct and clutch pedal is there but to the floor.
As I said before, the shifter hump looks the goods as does the steering column which has NO hole for either 3 speed manual or auto column shift. And there were no T bar autos in XR.

I'm surprised someone paid that much for it.
Gonna take a big effort to bring it back from that state, but not impossible. So did it have VIN plates still on the body?

if it was genuine and had the compliance plates the price was reasonable. yes it will take a lot of work but in 5 to 10 years someone will have a nice GT , only down side is the lack of the original matching engine.

Why would you spend $40k plus to restore this GT when there is plenty of good Xr - Xt's around.. if you can afford them with history and matching numbers. I dont understand why you would bother restoring this one.. How long is a piece of string.

for some people the joy is not in the ownership but in restoring a badly deteriorated wreck to it's former glory. just buying a restored GT you can't look at the pics of the resto and proudly say I did that

I've restored cars before and there is also the dissapointment of finding things are far worse then first expected.. And that my friend can be a reminder of plenty of heartache of wasting money. I've been there before.
