I have 3.23's in the wagon so I pretty much have an idea of what it'd be like. I guess 3.23's would be the least preferred option and that for a real improvement I'd need the 3.45's. I doubt I'd go any more than that, as that's what the XR's had.

I must admit though, the very lopey feel of first gear with the current 3.08's(being able to creep up a fair speed) would actually be of benefit in the midst of the Ring Road peak that I'm increasingly getting caught in at Airport West. LOL!

I'll wait until school holidays are done, drive it to work for a week or two and see how I go. Now that I have the manual, it's a big step forward and I can take some time to consider my next move. Heaven knows it took much pondering to get the conversion done in the first place. So glad I did though.

Dude, I think that would be less to do with the diff and more to do with the extra 40-odd rwkw I have over you! Then again, if you dropped over $6k on your motor and drive train, you wouldn't be the one complaining anymore! :P

As for the diff gears, with the manual, I would honestly not go any higher than 3.45 for everyday driving. I find that in bumper to bumper traffic, i am always just between first and second gear with the 3.7
That would be my only gripe with it though. I must admit, with the small amount of power that I now have, it is pretty fun even in the dry!

I didn't notice a big difference from 3.23 to 3.45's

would prefer 3.7's - and i have an EA 5spd which have a short first gear anyway

GK will be going from 3.08 to 3.45 - should be a reasonable difference there.

3.45 is the go for the sedan. It's about a 15% change, so 15% drop in max speed in each gear and 15% increase in revs at a given speed - enough to notice but not be too annoying on the highway... a bit under 300rpm more at 100km/h. A smaller change (eg going to 3.23 from 3.08 or to 3.45 from 3.23) is usually not worth doing.

BTW going to 3.73 from 3.23 is also around a 15% change... in my wagon it would increase revs at 100km/h from 1780 to 2050 and drop 1st gear max from 89 to 77km/h.

Thanks for that input guys! When the change is on, 3.45s it is!

So going from a current 1,800rpm @ indicated 100kmph to 2,070rpm? About right?

What are everyone elses manual 5 speed XR I6's revving at for 100kmph?

Well you wouldn't want mine then George, cos it sits all the way up at 2200rpm at 100km/h in 5th. It is a bit of pain, but on the other hand it still pulls a bit if i am lazy and can't be bothered down shifting! :P

Have a look at this George... well hopefully it works, I haven't tried posting attachments here before. It's a little spreadsheet I set up to work out which of the various Supra gearboxes might suit my needs, but can be adapted simply by inputting the ratios of any box and the tyre sizes you might want to use (on the Inputs page). There should be enough diff ratios to cover all scenarios but these can be altered too.

Then just fill in / pick the yellow boxes on the Calcs page and you have some comparisons. These use the ***nominal*** tyre sizes and don't account for wear, so may be up to a couple of % out.

Gk do you know what model your gearbox was made for? if it was a series 1 au it will have a shorter first gear if my memory serves me correctly.

I don't know exactly Mik, but only that it's an AU NOS box. It certainly doesn't feel like a short first gear, so I'm tipping it's not the S1 box.

GK congrats on the conversion, :eclipsee_ .

As for the crusie control, I thought that the manuals had a different module because of it being manual, eg. when i reset mine at 75ks to go back to 100ks it pulses and doesnt just keep accelerating to 100ks, I would ask ford or get another opinion from somebody that is 100% sure.

Well I hope I haven't gone and done it! LOL!

Evan came over and I looked at his clutch and the switch that's part of the cruise setup. With some (read stacks) fiddling around we got the cruise working.

Now here's the dodgy bit! GK puts flame suit on!

I thought that if you had the cruse control on in a manual, and the clutch was depressed (just like the brake) it should disengage the cruise right? Either I haven't adjusted it just right or that doesn't happen.

I had it in 2nd or 3rd and so I had the cruise on, then I depressed the clutch to see if it would disengage, but it revved up to 6ish and I turned off the cruise at the indicator stalk. Gave me a fright.

Turned around, engaged cruise again, touched brakes, cruise disengaged.

Drove home (5 blocks) and went to drive in the driveway and it wouldn't go into 1st properly. What have I done? Fried the clutch without even doing a burnout or runs at Calder?

I was stumped. So I popped the bonnet and adjusted the clutch cable from the nut and I could get the gearbox working again, the clutch was much softer, but the engagement point was also further out from the firewall.

What do you reckon happened? Did I just overheat the clutch and gearbox? It actually didn't smell at all clutchy when I got home, and I'd know that smell as I've had manuals in the past. Evan also said it didn't smell funny.

So what was it? Perhaps the jabbing on the clutch with the cruise engaged, popped it out of whack in the pedal and cable setup?

Any ideas (apart from don't do that ever again)?

before you adjusted your clutch, where was your clutch point high middle or low. Cause sometimes i have realised that i dont push in the clutch all the way and it doesnt let me into gear.

Low - that is it engaged as soon as the clutch pedal came up from the firewall.

I had a drive of it just before and all appears good. I guess I need to readjust to life with a manual. LOL!
