One of my mates used to lurk on FF.com (he's now a poster on Offtopic.com) and told me about the site. So eventually I bothered to look at it. I heard about this site somehow, but it was before it had the FF.com.au URL, then Casper invited me here when it became FF.com.au. Haven't posted on the old one since, read some OLD threads on it recently though.

I'm 5123. Wow. I am but a newbie...

I was in the market for a '60's Falcon, and I jumped on the net to research XPs and I just stumbled accross this forum.

I read all of two posts and then thought, "Hell I'll be in on this!" So I signed up.

I've got more information from this forum in the week I have been on it, than I could have hoped for in a lifetime of google searches!

Good Stuff!

Forbidden(tm)

There was some bitterness involved and its better left dead and buried.

I found out about this forum off of ff.com. I found it funny that when I was going through ff.com in december that ther seemed to be nothing happening. It was like everybody had disappeared, 'till I found this forum and therefore found everybody else.

It's far enough behind us now to tell the story.

Those who frequented the old forum would be aware that the site owner there was a little inclined towards the odd outburst - what isn't common knowledge is that these outbursts actually put the continuation of that forum at risk on a number of occasions.

After one of these incidents in April last year I obtained the .au domain name as a contingency against such a threat.

Towards the latter part of last year there were some further incidents that caused some concern for the Australian based admin team on that site (myself, laminge, xa-coupe, DK and Chucky) and discussions were started with that site owner to resolve the issues.

At the same time (early December '04) work commenced on preparation for this site with a suitable web host being tested and the technical team (xa-coupe & MetalMan) building a test site using a copy of vBulletin kindly donated by xa-coupe. At this stage no decision had been made to actually activate the domain name as discussions were still continuing with the .com site owner but it became apparent in the latter part of December that these had broken down and work on this site commenced in earnest.

On 23rd December a hosting site was selected, funded and the server was completed on December 29th. Various background tasks were completed by a lot of people including logo design (Chucky), forum layout (xa-coupe), discussions with potential sponsors (laminge) etc. and a massive effort was put in by the technical gurus to have the site up and running in time for the December 31st target date.

24 hours prior to go-live the site sponsors, Ford Australia contacts and moderators of the other site were advised of the decision and (of course) the email prepared and sent in a huge mass mailing to advise the opening of this site.

It was a hectic couple of weeks and a move that was made with some sadness but we can look back on it now and view it as a positive decision that has seen this site expand rapidly into the community it is today. There are still things we need to achieve but the entire team is working hard to ensure that this remains the best site for Australian (and other) Ford enthusiasts.

That's enough of a look in the rear-view mirror - it's time now to look ahead and enjoy whatever the future holds.

Cheers
Russ

Thanks for that, very interesting to hear the "behind the scenes" story like that.

Quick question, you mentioned that "outbursts actually put the continuation of that forum at risk", did that have anything to do with the problems some optus users had with accessing the old site, or don't you know?

Hey I didn't know all of that, thanks for telling the story.

And thanks to all the guys who put in serious work behind the scenes of this place! You are GODS to me

As for me, I am a refugee from .com. I know I joined in around July/August 04 cos that was around the time the EA was getting the engine put in her.

Since I am an e-series member, I got an email from John (EF Falcon) to tell me of the change and got straight back into my daily fix.

Ok dumb question (blonde day today) - how can I tell what number I was/am??? lol I am curious as to how others know what number they are.

No - that was an unrelated technical issue caused by Optus.

Ahh, so it was optus at fault, thanks for that, I was curious because I was one of the people who uses Optus internet who had problems accessing the other site on occasion, and since the swap to the new site I have not been experiencing the same timeout errors.

Cheers!
