The button does wiggle in the momo shifter compared to the normal vinyl shifter. Nothing a bit of ingenuity can't fix though.

Well, I've called a number of places, and it seems that the AU I red/black MOMO is no longer available, even via the Ford dealershiop spare parts divisions.

So, this leaves me with two alternatives:

1) Have the red hand grip leather replaced on the original wheel.

2) Purchase an AUII/III blue/black wheel (which is readily available for $200ish) and have the blue leather re-dyed to red.

What do you guys think?

It is a fairly light shade of Red. Maybe the grey would re-color better than the blue?

I'll sell you my new red/black one, going cheap for $1500.. :evil3:

Why shouldn't it fade or get stained. It's just leather. Haven't you ever seen an old cow? Not quite as shiny as a calf! LOL.

HP Dude - why not just get a blue/black one anyway? That colour goes with any AU interior - AU1 black/red or AU2 Grey/blue.

Well if that's the case, there sure are a lot of AU XRs with faded 'fake' MOMO wheels, and at the same time with Tickford ID plates in the engine bay confirming a Tickford fitted MOMO wheel!

Like JCXR8 said, at the end of the day, it's only leather. I would hazard a guess that perspiration/oil from the drivers hands are the main culprit. The black leather part of the wheel is okay.

I think I'll get a black/grey wheel (as per XR8ute's suggestion) and have it re-dyed. Before I do anything, I'll consult with a number of leather upholsterers.

Oh, XR8ute, I'll keep your most generous offer in mind :hihi:

I'd still be inclined to email MOMO to tell them. If nothing else you can brush up on your Italian :-)

I just got my momo wheel and DAM does it feel nice I was wondering what you crazy bastards where on about. Dunno why but just feels soo much better to hold onto. Feels solid unlike the vinyl where you squeeze it and it goes squishy. Im considering the momo shifter as well but im gonna be chaning cars in a few months and passing mine off to parents... so not sure if its worth it but i still wanna do heaps of mods first

I thought the XR6 HP's 'stock' leather wheel felt nice...until I drove the XR8 with the MOMO. It blew me away. Can't wait until Wednesday...

All colours including the woodgrain, I just picked up a grey one for my brothers car.

How hard are the steering wheels to fit?

Does it have any affect on the air bag? Eg. is it hard to incorrectly fit them? I was just thinking if you fit it wrong and the airbag doesn't work properly it could cause serious injury..

Not sure what you mean by 'effect on the air bag'? Obviously you have to remove it to take the old wheel off and put the new one on, but otherwise the new wheel wont damage or impede the airbags operation one bit.
If you do it wrong there is always the chance you'll blow up the airbag, quite a good way to test the integrity of your undies.

That was what i was trying to get at...... Just wanted to know if its a job you should be doing in your backyard or should you leave it to the professionals...

Well, there are a few on here who have done it themselves, personally its not something Id try but if you know what youre doing, have the right tools and some confidence, I guess there is no reason why you couldnt try it.

Just keep in mind a new airbag if you stuff the old one is NOT by any means cheap.

its a piece of p!ss

disconnect the battery and leave it for a minute so any stored power can clear.

unbolt the airbag from the wheel with a 5 point size 30 Torx bit

leave the airbag connected, just move it out of the way so you can...

unbolt the steering wheel from the coloumn with 6 point size 50 torx bit

remove steering wheel from coloumn with gear puller or similar

reverse the above steps to install new wheel

I have actually changed a steering wheel over for a mate and forgot to disconnect the battery. The air bag did not go off. I would not recommend this though, as it's better to be safe than sorry, so definitely disconnect battery (or at least the air bag fuse) first.

Its that easy i reckon a monkey could do it!!!
You definately need the 6 sided size 50 torx bit,but if you cant find the size 30 5 sided torx bit just get a set of screwdriver bits with the centre missing(looks like a fork with 2 prongs) and the 2 side screws that hold the airbag down should undo very easy.
Once thats done all you do is raise the horn pad up and disconnect the yellow cable going into the airbag then sit the centre infront of ur speedo (still had the stereo wheel switches attached).You undo the centre bolt and work it off.Prob wont even need a steer wheel puller.
Its an awesome feeling once you have the new one fitted!!!

it is VERY easy, i made my own tools with a bit of help from my old man who was a fitter and turner for 20 odd years out of a small flat head screw driver!

i disconnected the battery, loosened the side bolts off, slid the air bag out, **while squinting and leaning inside the car from outside** i SLOWLY disconnected the airbag plug, the yellow one... i dont think i have been so nervous in my life LOL

it really is a piece of **** as someone else said, nothing to be afraid of!

OK ... it took over an hour to loosen my damn steering wheel and get it off ... the thing was jammed on ... luckily I was at Crescent Motors (so i could used their Torx bits) ... it ended up take 3 people to get the damn wheel off and a steering wheel pulling tool.

*shakes head*

Joe from Crescent told me he had never seen a steering wheel on so tight.

But it's on now ... and very happy.

Mate of mine who used to be a Ford mechanic did it all without diconnecting the battery ... he's done so many of them before ... he wasn't that careful with the airbag at all ... he said they are pretty sturdy and can take a knock.

Rob I would have been like you ... been very careful ... but i watched him for it ... damn ... he was like a bull in a chine shop with it ... LOL

Damn .... $295 ... I went to Roman Autotek and paid $220 for a black/grey version ... they also had the black/blue and black/red there as well.

Also picked up the auto shifter in leather too for $90
