We already are....... now have to be escorted into the quarry by a guy in a small car with red flags and beacon lights.

Its funny people banging on about how fast they should be allowed to drive on our crap roads, meanwhile over on the petrol price thread we are complaining about the price of fuel.
Geeze at 130km/h + on hwy's I reckon the fuel tanks going to empty alot quicker.

Imagine the cost, and special high speed rating on the tyres needed to do 417 Km/h.!
Not your average tyre found at your local Bob Jane T-mart. Would not want a tyre blowout at that speed. Anyone want to try it on Winruns? |

With the condition of the roads I use, I wouldn't like to go much faster than the speed limits....sometimes better to be under just to give you time to avoid all the potholes, cracks, poor bitumen work and raised manholes.
Even driving at night is the difference between getting home comfortably vs hard hits to the rims. Yet every time I turn a corner there is roadworks (and another reduced speed limit) |

I think it'll start making a significant difference once you start pushing over the 150 mark for longer periods of time. |

I’ve driven the autobahns in a Merc- it’s a different world entirely. At first when I got on an autobahn I thought what’s so great but after about 2 mins the engineering of the road, the etiquette of ALL the other drivers and of course the brilliant car all crystallised to form the holy trinity of driving- the roads, driver training and the cars. The fastest I went was about 190 km/h and I was always sure to check the mirror. If you were a bit long in the fast lane (left lane) you would glimpse the flash from behind as the Audi/BMW/MB/Porsche came up. Most of them were in the 240+ range judging by the speed differential. I’ll remember it as a great eye opener as to just how backward we are here in every way.

Steer tyre blowouts (at legal speeds) are fine so long as you're holding onto the steering wheel.

Who needs 2 wheels to steer anyway, just use the other one.

What I found was that the majority of German cars would simply come on and then shortly thereafter, exit the Autobahns. There were many other nationalities driving the longer distances. |

Mobility amongst the EU is too easy. When I was working in London, we used to knock off at 5, fly into any part of Europe by 10pm, usually for under 30 quid, spend the weekend there and get back for work on a Monday morning. People did this all the time. Hiring a car doesn't require anything special either, not sure if that was due to the UK licence, when they were part of the EU.

My EK Van would hit a 100mph, but took a long time to get there, the NT was unlimited on the Stuart Hwy and if you got caught you just had to prove in court it was safe, ie, no rain, clear vision etc, the Autobahns are just another highway that you use a bit to get where your going then you get off, no big deal really! |

The sections of Autobahn which have no restriction on speed are all exceptionally well designed, built and maintained. In other words, the polar opposite of our road networks.

Like the Tullamarine Freeway, it's 5 lanes wide each way and it's still 80km/h. There's a dirt road around the corner from where I live with a 100km/h speed limit. |
