I hate it! I live on a street that has a bend, people alway drive too fast around it... the 31st of Oct send chills down my back everytime I hear and engine rev or a tyre lockup....

Halloween itself is not an American invention. The practice of going begging for sweets is. I really dont understand it...after all, I thought giving lollies to strange kids was a bad thing. Well, thats what the judge told me...

To all those people that celebrated Halloween this year, will you be celebrating Thanksgiving this November?

How about the 4th of July or President's day?

My parents are Scottish and they used to celebrate the 31st of October when they were younger, so what has that got to do with Thanksgiving, 4th of July or President's day?

In the area where i live all of the local businesses get loads of lollies and the kids go around all dressed up. There was hundreds of them yesterday going around everywhere. There was police directing traffic on the street haha.

I work in a bank and a few of them came in all dressed up. I said to one of them who would have been about 12, "Take that mask off, you can't come into a bank with a covered face!" It was hilarious.. he completely thought i was serious and just got that stunned omg i'm in sh!t look on his face lol.

They don't cause any harm. In my neighbourhood theres one of the mothers that organizes it all, she puts flyers and a piece of orange ribbon in all of the letterboxes and the idea is if you're welcoming the trick or treaters, tie the orange ribbon to the fence so the kids know its ok to go there. I thought it was a good idea and considerate of those who don't want to be bothered with it.

Halloween was pushed hard in Seppoland, because the marketing people figured that they needed something (for people to spend money on) between the 4th of July and Christmas.

I've never had the pleasure of anywhere I've lived have kids trick or treating us, either that means the kid's cant be stuffed or we're all tight....

Having said that though, if I got a knock at the door after tea time would mean I would have to get off the couch to answer it= too hard basket

Does anyone here remember cracker night in brisbane? I think it may have originated with Guy Fawkes night but every year letterboxes went boom and we all saved up our money to buy crackers, double bangers and fizzers and, the ultimate, a catherine wheel.

Never remember anyone getting hurt.

Wuz kids had to settle for sparklers.

Built a watertight letterbox out of eighth plate steel in high school to stop it getting blown up (filled it with water so the fuses went out when the crackers were dropped in).

Never remember halloween, tho.

Good observation, it is all fun and OK until it goes wrong and then there's no one to blame but yourself for not being careful enough.

I'm 44 and there is no way I would give my 6 y/o the freedom I had when I was 6.

Stupid Halloween

As somebody mentioned its actually a Euro tradition not American..

Either case, my Festiva got egged.. And I raged so hard about it... If it had of been the XR8 I would of taken to the streets with Weapons

Had knocks at the door this year, first time ever.. Seriously what the hell is going on.

Grrr my Festiva got egged... I feel the rage surfacing again

As a youngin I recall going out 3 or 4 years in a row.
We got all kinds of things - fruit, dog biscuits, money, lectures & a few lollies here & there.
From a safety point there's no way in hell my daughter will ever be doing it.

I'm not over protective, she's just not doing anything I ever did.

They might be kids but they're annoying, Hell, I'm still a kid (17 years old) but I never done any of that crap, in fact, I actually hate little kids. I'm going to be one of those old 70 year old men who sits on their front lawn waiting to yell at kids for stepping on my property.

some people just shouldn't be allowed to own guns, like this person, Quentin Patrick, 22, from Sumter, South Carolina.
and this was a comment to the story. I think this guy had some inside information?

Quote:
Yeah it should be like totally clear from this story that broke like two hours ago that like this dude shouldn't have had like a gun. It was obvious this man was on some drugs too like you said. No other answer makes any sense 2 me. I think he was high on mariwana when this happened and he was playing sonic the hedgehog and he couldn't differianteieate between life and the game and thats why he like did it.

Man guns down trick or treater with AK47...cites fear of being robbed

Quote:
SUMTER, S.C. – An ex-convict who thought he was being robbed gunned down a 12-year-old trick-or-treater, spraying nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside his home after hearing a knock on the door, police said Saturday.

Quentin Patrick, 22, is accused of killing 12-year-old T.J. Darrisaw on Friday night. T.J.'s 9-year-old brother, Ahmadre Darrisaw, and their father, Freddie Grinnell, were injured but were released after being treated at a hospital.

The family attended a Halloween celebration in downtown Sumter, 45 miles east of Columbia, then stopped at Patrick's house because the porch light was on, police said. Another sibling was with them, but wasn't hurt.

Police said at least two of the boys were wearing ghoulish masks when they knocked on the door. The boys' mother and a toddler stayed in the car nearby.

Patrick emptied his AK-47, shooting at least 29 times through his front door, walls and windows after hearing the knock, Police Chief Patty Patterson said.

He told police he had been robbed and shot in the past year.

"He wasn't going to be robbed again, and he wasn't going to be shot again," Patterson said Saturday at a news conference.

She said T.J., a bright young man, suffered multiple wounds, including a fatal shot to his head. No one answered the door at the family's home Saturday.

"This is by far one of the worst tragedies that I have had to personally experience," Patterson said. "It happened basically because kids were out doing what they would normally do on Halloween."

Patrick has been charged with murder, three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill, and one count of assault with intent to kill.

Police said they also charged a 19-year-old in his home, Ericka Patrice Pee, with obstruction of justice when she was caught trying to run away after the shooting with $7,500 in cash. Patterson did not give an explanation for the money.

Pee's 2-year-old daughter was inside during the shooting and is now being cared for by family members.

Patterson said Patrick had multiple drug convictions but police do not believe he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the shooting. Authorities did not know if Patrick or Pee had attorneys. Both are being held without bond.

A man who identified himself as Patrick's brother but declined to give his name said in a call to The Associated Press that he believed Patrick was suffering from post-traumatic stress after a break-in last December. The man's account matched the information police provided.

"We want to let his family know that this is a total tragic accident," he said. "He was trying to protect his family."

Patrick's home is off a busy, two-lane road in Sumter, a city of about 40,000 people. On Saturday, shattered glass still covered the front stoop and about 20 bullet holes peppered the front door and a front-window casement. A firefighter used a hose to wash bloodstains away.

The shooting shocked residents of a neighborhood where most people know each other well.

"I just hate it that that little kid got killed. It used to be the quietest place. I knew everybody and everybody knew me," said Vivian Johnson, 81, who lives two doors from Patrick and Pee but said she did not know them.

County Councilman Charles Edens said he lives just a few blocks away and passed the crime scene on his way back from trick-or-treating with his 13-year-old daughter, who was upset by the news.

"It's going to put a dampening on Halloween," Eden said. "I would think twice about going to a door that we don't know who lives behind."

I certainly don't want to spur the anti's on so I will pre-empt - AK47 is illegal to own in Australia (legal in US though). However it would not have changed anything - criminals don't obey the law - the guy was an ex-con, it was a drug house and he had no permit for the AK (any law against it would not have prevented this).

I hope this thread dosn't go down that path though - my post was pointing out that its silly for parents to let their kids go knocking on complete strangers doors even if supervised (like the poor kid above).
