Found the story on the Vic Police site.

Now my question is, who else has seen a police chase? I mean a real police chase and not on TV.

Please do not turn this thread into a police bashing thread. Just wants peoples story about the chases they have seen.

Seen quite a few and have been in several , 30 yers ago a friend had a super hot manual xy sedan , we were at a party at Sunnybank Brisbane which involved to much booxe and me taking a sleep on the back seat of his car in the small hours and waking to find him heading home off his face being chased up Beaudesert Road through rocklea , he was pushing the car which was stroked and ran twin carbs with the throttle down hard through lights of all colours heading to Mooroka where he lived ( I lived at Chardons corner ) when I realised something was drowning out the sound of the police chase and sirens... Me screaming as we went round corners up dark streets with no lights for a good 20 minutes . Eventually he got stopped and I escaped onto the ground sobbing and near vomiting , he got six months and a huge fine being forced to sell the car as he couldn't drive again forever .
I often work odd hours in Brisbane and return home at 3 or 4 am , just a few weeks back was giving the bimmer it's head in 4th and 5th , as I shifted into 6th a godzilla passed me as if parked and an unmarked Ford V8 in pusuite on his bumper (flashing lights in the grill )slowly falling back , the Nissan was flooring it and it sounded quite good although by the time I got to klump rd they were out of sight , many times I have seen cars driven into islands gutters and a couple of times pulled injured out .
Lots more stories not enought time

The guy was spinning you a load.

I don't dispute the claim about baiting though, the Wynnum(Bris.) cops used to frequent Fishemans Island where there were large gatherings of people due to the very long straight that was deserted at night on weekends. Witnessed them arrive in their newly acquired VL turbo, pulled up behind some cars and watched for a while. Nothing was happening so they pulled back on the road at the start line and pulled a big burnout then reversed back to the line and waited for someone to line up. Those there that night were not biting so they took off in another cloud of tyre smoke
If this is so how come i got busted for speeding in West Heidleburg in 1981 by two plain clothed cops driving an Escord sundowner panelvan with surfboards on roof rack?

Seen a few police chases in my time, saw 2 detectives in a unmarked vx at the time try and take on a worked supra, as you can imagine it was over in matter of seconds, the other one that comes to mind was the highway patrol trying to stop a bike from a slow rolling start, one again officers got pawned!!!!

Heres a scary thought,
Police in Parramatta area and surrounds used to find it amusing to hit back wheels of motorbikes in the 70's and 80's especially dirtbikes around vacant land where young blokes would ride on the road to get there, silly buggers but several were killed over that period where officers claimed they rode out in front of them, once or twice maybe but it was a well known trick to knock them off bike resulting from minor and up to life threatening injuries, the ploy worked as teenagers in the mid 80;s were much less likely to bolt

I doubt it was a private vehicle, but if it was his superiors had no knowledge of it
They are just not allowed to use their own private vehicle for Police duties for the above reasons and more. most of these "I heard about" are just baloney

Since many chases end in a crash, and having a scanner with me most of the time in my vehicles I usually know if there is a chase heading my way. Helps to know this when driving fuel tankers so you can get out of the way.
Years ago, Coburg police used an EH holden to bait the young blokes. It had a real hot red motor, triples, cam etc, lowered, chromies you get my drift. it was owned by one of their constables, who in later years became one of the vice squads leading figures. They have used private cars for years, this was in the 70's.

Early 90s a mate and i was working on my pride and joy at the time - a HB Torana. We heard siren in distance... thought nothing off it. Bit it dawned on us 'hey thats getting real close'.

Bolted down driveway and to right about 200m away we saw a trail bike coming toward us... and in hot pursuit was a XF van. It clean went over the round a bout - all four in the air.

Bike zoomed past us... tries to turn left at T intersection. Too fast and he comes off. Stood up pretty promptly so was ok in the main. Police placed him in divvy van. bike placed against pole. not there in the morning....

Kids- don't try this at home...
I have seen a police chase real close up - from the passenger seat of one heavily worked SL/R Torana. My mate driving thought it would be a good idea not to stop one night when a Police VN Commodore hit the disco lights to pull us over.

Lucky it was 2 in the morning in the middle of an industrial area with no one else around or it could have ended badly...it could have ended badly in any case. Wound the Torana off the speedo and left the VN for dead. Slowed down then sideways through an intersection as we spotted an XF panel setting up a road block.

We were near another mates house, who was also with us in the car, so my other mate killed the engine and coasted into his driveway - pushed the Torana into the garage just as we heard sirens screaming down the main road.

My mate didn't drive that Torana for over a month - he sold a few months after that. That was over 2 decades ago. Now at the tender age of 40, I really wonder how I ever made it past my 21st birthday!

It turned out that although he did not know me personally, I did know his son reasonably well which may have saved me a defect perhaps, who knows, but the fact remains, off duty still in uniform in a private car. And yes in the North Eastern suburbs in S.A. I would never run from a cop, ever, so I do not know if he would have chased me or not.

OT, I got my Bridgestone white letting "60 series" from Mc leods Modbury in about 1983 too!

Ok because many people don't know this
An Off duty Police person can not stop you in their private car and they can not issue tickets for anything while off duty. all they can do is observe and report. Anyone who is pulled by over or had one attempt to pull you over can report them to the higher authority.

Uniform or not, they are off duty and have no more rights than anyone else in this regard. Unless they are flashing red/blue lights or holding up a flashing "Police" sign, you under no obligation to stop

B/S. Quite often you hear about people getting arrested by off duty coppers for doing something illegal. Good example. Get a copy of the movie Postcard Bandit. If it what you've written is true, Mr Abbott's legal team would have swarmed all over it.

Next spin.

No, you hear about people being arrested after they were reported by or detained by off duty police. Unsure about citizen arrest rules in Australia but I am sure that even you have certain powers for detaining a person, this is what an off duty police officer would use

I know this because I have a few relatives(immediate family and distant) who are current and past Officers and all they can do when they see crimes committed is to observe and report.
But the response was for someone who says they were stopped by off duty Police in a private car. which they can not do legally. Some Police get away with it because people are ignorant of this

I've stayed out of this one so far as I'm a serving Qld copper of 23 years, but I guess there's no harm in a short response. Just to clarify things - I can still arrest someone when I'm off duty. I am required to identify myself as a copper but can do that verbally without producing my Police identification if need be. I can still lawfully pull someone up in my own car but if I did so I wouldn't have a TIN book with me so it would either be a matter of getting a working crew there (say for a blind rotten drunk drink driver) or grabbing some driver/vehicle details and following it up later. I can lawfully issue a Traffic Infringement Notice whilst off duty as well, but to be perfectly honest I wouldn't bother and I don't know of many of my colleagues who would!

Have been in a few pursuits over the years and don't really want any more. It's just far too easy for things to go pear shaped and put everyone into a world of hurt. Qld Police Service policy has now pretty much put an end to pursuits in any case. We need to have really good reasons to get into a chase these days!

Take care guys,

Russ

I have two experiences with unmarked cars

i was busted after being baited by a WRX in Fivedock in 1995, they followed me for ages doing the launches at lights, So on the 3rd set of lights i dropped the clutch on my XW and on come the party lights.
(Rumor had it they also had a RX3 mazda but i never saw it)

The 2nd time i was with 3 other cars and we were playing silly buggers at the lights in the wet and when we got to Forest Rd Bexley my mate was stopped at the lights (We made it through) and a off duty copper identified himself and took the keys from the ignition and called for other police.
We did a u-turn to see if my mate had broken down and spotted him getting loaded into the paddy wagon.
His missus told us which station he was going to, i lost scissor paper rocks and went to wait for him.
While sitting in Rockdale station i heard the police on the desk say they were still looking for the red fairlane and blue falcon possible XD/XE.
I looked out the glass window at my blue XD and though might be best if i moved it down the street a little.
Was a long night left there at like 3am all because of 2 items he had in his console.

P.s
I now have a mate who is a Detective and they have a deal with a bunch of car dealers where they can borrow used cars for surveillance and undercover ops if needed. So i guess they could almost chose whatever they have on the lot. Doubt they would be allowed let alone want to use their own cars.

I was driving east on Dandenong Rd in Melbourne, when a car came screaming up behind me and swerved into the service lane, mounting the curb and almost losing control. Seconds later, two unmarked cop cars with full lights and sirens go after it. My girlfriend was about 1km behind me in her car, and she said the cop cars were sitting at a set of lights when the offender just went straight through a set of red lights (with speed and red light camera going nuts) and the cops just took off after them.

Nearly thought he was going to ram me to get through the traffic. Pretty scary even though he probably didn't come close. Pretty hard to judge things when people are travelling at 130+km/h...
