i hope there are young 20's people out there in industries paying over 100k / yr . without having to go to the mines for it . . me and a few mates. some of them quite wealthy through investing , were discussing incomes . we agreed that a young couple in sydney starting out . need to be on an incone of 180kgross combined for around 5 years , without kids . to be able to afford to buy a 500+k home and have kids , buy 2 cars and then pay off over 15 years. in which case they would now be approaching 40 , and trading up to a better home and paying that off over 15 to 20 years . .

all previous generations in sydney have lived like this .

I work for the NSW Gov. For all its faults it is relatively worker friendly. Some of the stuff I have worked on lately is working on ways to limit or stop the impact of WorkChoices on families. Legally there is not scope to make wholesale changes but we do do some small stuff that we still have powers over such as child employment. Laws were recently passed that meant that children employed in NSW, even if working for a workplace covered by WorkChoices, can't be worse off than had they be employed under pre WorkChoices arrangements. Unfortunately we only have the power to legislate for under 18's, OHS and other secondary matters. The rest is up to the electorate.

I am a union man though and through and an ex-organiser and I am proud of it.

I wouldn't think it would need to be that much. My girlfriend and I are on fairly good income and have just bought a block of land to build on. The mortgage will be around 450k which will get us a really nice house in a good area in Cairns. Our combined income is about 140k gross but we don't have any other loans to service. I have done the sums and we can afford extra repayments now so that in a few years we can refinance and reduce repayments for when the kids come along. Hard to predict what will happen after 5 or so years but I hope that my plans will have us paying off the house in less than 20yrs (closer to 15 hopefully).

Oh and I work as a process operator.

WOW! im a community support worker + student. im only on like 40k and my girlfriend is on like 32k (which is pretty shabby for a qualified hairdresser) we bought a block of land and building a house, all up walk in is costing us 270k. we will only just be able to afford it but re-sale in whyalla is like at 140 - 150% average with the mining boom.
looks like i should be dealing drugs on the side or selling myself as an asian women for extra dough!
