Amazing, ALL of you young whipper snappers are going to get OLD? or maybe something will get you long before you can become a bother to society.

These people may seem a tad painful to deal with but I am sure you lot will be equally as nasty? Ever thought of taking the time to understand? To the guy that is embarrassed by his Nan, maybe she would be hurt to knwo that her grandson finds her so funny and repulsive?

I have 9 grandchildren and the eldest are 13 and young ladies. Not once have they ever seen me as a source of fun or giggling behind my back.

Stick around Kiddies and watch the mirror daily for WRINKLES and OTHER signs of aging.

Then there's the saying: "Today's angry young men are tomorrow's boring old farts". Watch out - it may be you tomorrow!

Agree there's lots of funny things in supermarkets from people of all ages. Best thing I've seen is a couple of old farts (ex angry young people I suppose), husband and wife, very old. The husband is doddering around with the trolley trying to go through a closed checkout. Mrs loses her block with him (she's much bigger), grabs him and the trolley bodily together and hurls husband and trolley into an open checkout. Amazed they've stayed married so long.

We live in an ageing society, so things will just get worse until soylent green is legalized.

The person you are referring to is a grand daughter, not a grand son. But I assume that mistake is easy to make with all us young people wearing pants now days right?

As an adult myself, I have the right, nay, the duty! to hate anyone I wish, irregardless of age(Including elderly family members). You also have that right, but you may need to write their name & gender on your hand for future reference.

I think he stays with her out of fear.

I think most of us look at these old farts and will not follow their example

I've no intention of getting old . I'd prefer to die before I get to the point where everything in my body begins to stop working and before I turn into a geriatric old fart who displays erratic and rude behaviour ;).

BTW a recent study proved that the brains of old people have degeneration within the areas that govern their behaviour, e.g. manners. Apparently it explains why old people gradually start saying exactly what they're thinking rather than biting their tongue and being polite.

Can't we get back to the original very funny bit of this thread rather than an ageist slanging match? Old Fartism is a state of the mind. There are plenty of 20 year old Old Farts around and plenty of eighty year olds with young minds trapped in a body that's letting them down. And there's Camry drivers too ... C'mon, more supermarket ones please!

Firstly as Sourbastard mentioned I'm her grand-daughter, and secondly, maybe she should consider how the things she says and does hurt me.
I certainly didn't appreciate her telling me I was fat, and would "never find a man" in front of ALL my friends and family at both my 18th and 21st birthday parties.
I don't appreciate being given old cheap fake "pearls", while she goes off telling everyone they are real, and were bought while she was in Japan.
When it was obvious to everyone who looked at them, that they were plastic beads because all the paint has chipped off.
She knew damn well they were fake too, because she wouldn't let me keep the black velvert box she handed them to me in.
As were the next 3 sets she gave me, when we tried telling her she'd given me the wrong ones.
I would have much prefered to get nothing, if she was going to make such a scene.
Or as happened the Christmas just gone, she gave me an old coathanger, with a paint sample chip as a card.
She tries to palm all her old ИИИИ off onto us, when we actually take the time to go out and spend money, and buy her something new.

I am her only grandchild, my father is her only child.
Even he has had enough of her, and avoids her as much as possible.
Never once in the 50 or so years he can recall did she ever tell him she loved him, or gave him a hug.
In fact his most vivid memory, was her sitting all night at the foot of his bed, watching him sleep. With a knife in her hand.

My maternal grandmother on the other hand, was everything you could possibly ask for in a grandmother. Kind, caring, affectionate.
She didn't have much money, but it didn't matter, her company was enough for me.

I would have done anything for her, and watching her die in front of me, knowing I couldn't do anything to ease her pain, is the hardest thing I've ever done.

That is really f**ked in the head.

Why that "woman" isn't in a mental institution is beyond me.

I'm really lost for words here, because I know absolutely no-one that age who acts like that.

You know, whilst it is all fun and laughter to make light of the predicaments old people are in, as well as to become frustrated at some of the things they do; one inescapable fact remains. Me you and everybody here will get old, if you're lucky enough to live that long.

Whilst some people may find it funny to laugh at people trying to save 5 cents here and there, when you are on a pension and a very limited income you too will find it difficult to survive. Even though I hear you say that you have superannuation; Bzzzzzt. Wrong. It is not enough. You would need to have superannuation dating back to when you started work as well as you would need to have matched your employer contributions in order to make it worth while when you retire - and even then, are you gonna waste it on extravagance or are you going to be careful with it?

I have seen some of the horrible things that kids like some in this thread do, and they may think its funny or harmless but it really is quite scornful. Again I'll say it, you will all one day be old. Additionally, most are likely to suffer some pretty embarrassing problems too, like the incontinence, dimentia, diabetes, stroke, just to name a few. (some of which have been made fun of here)

If you're really lucky, you'll get to go to a home where you'll be treated by impatient little bastards that are extremely forceful, dim witted and at times vicious. (I'll send you transcripts of some proceedings if you like in particular an old man with dimentia and his abusive, impatient nurse caught on camera constantly hitting him).

Finally, I'm not here to beat my chest but I just ask for a little courtesy and recognition that we all will be old at some point - making fun of the conditions old people suffer is absolutely ridiculous as most of us will likely suffer atleast one. Me personally, I like old people, generally I find they are friendly, warm, respectful and interesting to listen to; you tend to find that when you realise that you too will one day be old.

Just looked up your birthdate sonny. I've been using computers since at least 10 years before you were even a sperm and an egg combined. Think your generation invented them then? Yet another thing you have to thank old farts for - and they were going pretty well too until the muddy-brained young geeks got hold of the industry.

Can we get back to supermarkets thanks?

It's the "old farts" that show little courtesy to others that we're whinging about. That's why we chose that term to classify them.
As for superannuation, a larger portion of the now elderly get a pension than what our generation ever will. We'll be self funded and less likely to get government help in the future and we get to pay for the current lot too.

You say we get to pay for their pensions as taxpayers, well they have been taxpayers too. Over their 45 plus years working wouldn't they have paid for their pensions under the same premise as we are allegedly paying for theirs?
As for all of us being self funded; I don't think so. That is why the government has introduced the dollar for dollar scheme to match our contributions, because at the time we are expected to retire, we will not nearly have enough. Especially when only a small percentage of employees put money into their superannuation fund.

Disrespecting the elderly is inherently an attitude problem and quite frankly, the quip, joke, remark or action you take now will be reflected upon you later when you are elderly yourself. If we want generational change where we will be respected in our old age then we must start social change ourselves.

Finally, I have spent some time going to nursing homes and repatriation hospitals in my youth (when I had spare time) and I gotta say, the elderly if you take some time are a wealth of information and knowledge. They can also be great company that will give you just that little bit more encouragement, enthusiasm or the voice of reason.

This goes both ways: My 85 year old father in law lives in a street where the young blokes either side park their cars on the footpath blocking the path for those that need a stick to aid walking. The cars are there most of the time (seems one is a restoration project and the other owner is on the dole) He has put up with it for eight months with no complaints, anyway I was outraged at this as his doctor wants him to walk to get exercise, so I go and ask nicely for them to not park there (He said he didn't want to be a pain to the young blokes in the street so asked me not to be rude to them- I wasn't) They didn't change their habbits! so I rang the council ranger (two weeks later mind you) and off course guess who is now not walking the (now clear) footpath because of the foulmouth comments and abuse he is getting from the same addresses.

A little courtesy both ways would make it a nicer place for all.

You youngins have it easy, back in my day, we used to walk barefoot 20 miles through snow and ice to work 36 hours a day for tea spoon of rat poison, were we spent all day folding paper clips into shape. THAN we walked back 30 miles through blistering desert were we lived at a hole in the bottom of a lake, all 256 of us!!!

It depends more on the person than the age, for the most part I think.

My Mum's Mum is a brainless, nasty old cow. She is the typical nasty little old lady, accusing people of doing things they didnt do (staff stealing her chocolate in the nursing home, etc), ИИИИИing about people behind their backs, making up stories about people, making judgements, being racists etc etc... the thing is that its not her age. She was always like that. Its her personality.

My Dad's Mum is 91 this April. She is kind, generous and intelligent. She is very active and has a lot of interest in things that a lot of women her age dont. She has full memberships to the Crows and Port Power and goes to Footy Park EVERY week, to see either team. She makes banners and screams and goes nuts like everyone else. She has bad asthma and if some drunk ****er shoves her at the footy, she wacks them with her oxygen cylinder she takes with her. She walks 5 km to and from the shops every week, she manages her own money and her investments and shes a heap of fun. Shes always been like that.

My own father is 63. Yes, he drives an AU Fairmont in silver. However, that was his company car, he had no choice. He is currently thinking about something that is more him... a Typhoon, GT-P or perhaps an XR6T with luxury pack. Whenever we drive together (ie separate cars), he tries to drag me at the lights at every opportunity, he does burnouts in my street (and the neighbours comment on "young people these days!" and he comes to the Clipsal with us every year. See, he is old but he has always had the same personality... he used to drag and track race his cars with his Dad as a kid and he has always loved his Fords.

My mother, well she is 60, but she may as well be 80. I wont go into much about her becuase I have discussed her before. Suffice to say that we dont get along and she is not worthy of breathing air on our planet. She is a crap driver, and she is one of those annoying shoppers at the supermarket but its not because of her age. Its because she has been a crap driver since she learned when she was 21 and she has always been arrogant and annoying in supermarkets...

So I reckon its more about how people are, on the whole. Sure, age has an impact, ie hearing and sight go (making shopping more difficult for them and for us), their memories go (meaning they come across as stupid and irritating) and they are not as observant as younger people - afterall their brains have been working for a long time and are just wearing out... I guess FEELING old, with deteriorating sight and hearing, knowing your memory is going and feeling generally feeble and useless can make some older people feel grumpy and horrible... I dont know, but I reckon when Im at the end of my days Im not going to be all cheery and nice if I feel like poo.

Im guessing Gerardine's grandma (there is no excuse for her behaviour IMO) has likely been like that to a degree most of her life, and its just gotten worse as she got older, perhaps. People dont just turn mean all of a sudden, not to that extent.

Hey, I know Im gonna be an old ИИИИИ, sitting in my rocking chair (next to Eamon who will the classic grumpy old b*stard), with my Ford blanket over my legs, screaming abuse out the front at all the silly young people these days driving those horrible ricey things with those horrible big fart cannons "Why cant young people drive REAL cars?" *old granny voice*.....

But Flappist, I do get your point, as I just came back from the massive supermarket BiLo we have here in Mt Barker. Its a nightmare. And I have to say the old people do annoy me, but then a lot of younger people do too... arrogant, inconsiderate and empty headed schoolgirls, Mums who let their kids run around and trash everything, people who drive shopping trolleys as well as they drive their cars.... I just hate shopping generally, always have.

This should perhaps be a b*tch about shopping centres and supermarkets, not old people!!! Haha.

Thats nothing.

In my day we had to get up 2 hours before we went to sleep, crawl over 30 miles of broken glass and work 45 hours a day and pay for the privilege. We lived in a shoebox in the middle of the road and were killed every night by passing trucks running us over.
