I travel through the mallee most years on my way through to Bris. Good to know ouyen has a decent bakery. Used to stop at one at lameroo as a kid which was good. Went back for old times sake a couple of years ago, and it was a case of 'how the mighty have fallen'. Terrible.

Good thread.
+1 for your recommendations. I also frequent those.
You need to discover Coromandel and Aberfoyle bakeries to fulfill your destiny.

Also can't forget one of the best in S.A.

Cafe de vilis!

If you haven't had a vilis chicken pie, you haven't lived.

Turnovers are pretty good too. I'm not aware of too many things I don't like.

I know he sells his stuff through many outlets including supermarkets but nothing like getting it fresh. I work on the same street.

Well, im not in lockdown. But we are talking quality baked goods. I do rate my local on price only. Only because theyre good value. And by that i mean you dont expect much for a $3.30 steak and mushroom pie, or a $2 lamington or ninish tart, the pies alone i would pay $4 for. So deffinately no tourist destination, but a hung over saturday morning, the 900m is worth it.

Many years ago I found this small modest-looking bakery and they made the best custard tarts I've ever had in my life. So good that I took a pic of it at the time!
I went back one day and they'd MOVED AWAY, I was devastated.

I've never been satisfied with another custard tart since, they're all crap in comparison.

BEHOLD.

FULL SIZE PIC SO YOU CAN SEE IT IN ALL ITS GLORY.

Thanks for sharing.
That's a handsome quantity of good looking custard in what looks like a perfect pastry envelope.

Was it an egg based baked custard or vanilla slice type?

Best egg based baked custard tart I ever tasted was from my parents bakery and also Smeatons at Glen Innes.

I couldn't tell you to be honest, I'm not much of a cook and I don't think I've ever had a vanilla slice.
The custard was a good inch or two higher than the crust like just a bulbous ball of yellow goop.
I thought it might be kinda rubbery since it was so big but it just wasn't, it was light and soft and jiggly and perfect. :p
Even the crust was still crispy, normally they go soggy but this thing still had crunch!

As you can see I had to stop and take a photo of it so as to preserve its memory.

Anyone tried the 12 inch custard "Long John" from the Roundabout Bakery in West Wyalong?

It basically looks like a chocolate eclair but is made from donut material and filled with a generous amount of sweet vanilla custard and a smear of strawberry jam.

From personal experience, that quantity of Long John takes some serious swallowing to make it dissappear.

You need to control those urges, it's not healthy

All good clean family food experiences here.

Apologies,
I'll keep things on the taste and texture path from now on.

A bakery thread. My life is complete. Now I have a gripe!!! No where in this great state of Queensland can I get a bakery chocolate eclair that is as good as Victorian eclairs. This has been the bane of my existence since I moved from Victoria in 1975...

Buttercrumbs Bakery in Five Dock NSW (Sydney metro)

They don't do pies/sausage rolls or any of that sort but this place is hands down THE best for pastries. Been bakery obsessed for many a year and haven't found anywhere else that tops it.

Though having said that, they are a fairly new establishment, so time will tell whether they can deliver the goods consistently for years to come.

I always wonder about that place but as long as Drummoyne bake house is up the Road they will get my money

Drummoyne bakehouse is a good bakery, definitely has more options on top of the garden variety standards, but Buttercrumbs is next level pastry.

Give it a go when you're feeling adventurous and you won't be disappointed.

Can vouch for the Clarendon Bakery - I drive there rather than the closer Aberfoyle options.

Also, Becks Bakery at Pt Noarlunga and Meadows gets a thumbs up.

And I reckon the Espy Bakery at Christies Beach should be on this SA list in the making.

Emerald Village Bakery & Cafe (Vic). Just about everything they make is really good, though their chocolate brownies aren’t as good as the ones my wife makes.
