64 HP per litre for the Viper. (76HP if it was an 8)

VS

102 HP per litre For the M3.

Maybe an uneven match there. But the same figures can be broadly used across the board for almost every V8 produced in a road car.

I love the off-beat pig-iron strum of an american 8. Its brilliant, but the note of a higher revving euro 8 is something else....

They need to get their act together the americans......
Yes what you have mentioned is true but it was just under 25 years ago that the V10 motor of the Dodge Viper was making about 650NM of torque, something that the little BMW V8 could only dream of and would never be able to make with all the possible current technology thrown at it. It's not exactly comparing apples with apples when you compare the high strung Euro motors since each motor is basically of a different design. There is no right or wrong between the two but I definitely know what I would rather. Enough torque to drag that brick wall along as much as possible

There's a Bullet in a mates workshop in Nambour at the moment, I had a good look at it last week and it is beautifully engineered.

You wouldn't want the viper..... Not in Oz.

The beemer may be expensive, but would be relatively easy to procure parts for. Even through dealers.

Can't just walk into a Dodge dealership, and order a new part for a Viper.

Same with aftermarket mods after the warranty runs out..... The Beemer is easier again.

Don't get me wrong, I'd own a Viper in a heartbeat. It's my favourite car since I was 10. But procurements of parts would be a pain in the *.

With the fuel consumption of a 5L but yes hard to compare to a piston engine for capacity.
But Physically they are very small lightweight engines.

I think a lot of people get too caught up in performance figures, So a 1.0 or 2.0 engine might be more powerful per litre, but on the street that doesn't even matter. How often on the street will you experience the full potential of your 0-100km or 0-400m time? Almost never (legally anyway) but the feeling of driving a V8 can be enjoyed at any speed, even just idling at a set of lights while the rumble of the V8 scares the ricer stopped next to you.

And as for those who do take their car to the track, if you get beaten by a V8 are you really going to say "but, but.... my car is more powerful per litre"?

A bit of an explanation here

Quote:
Big thing to remember is these are not directly comparable to piston engines for reasons that are both obvious and not.

The rotor its' self only spins once for every 3 rotations of the crankshaft. For a piston engine to send one piston through all 4 cycles takes 720* of crank rotation

Each rotor has 3 "faces", so for a full 4 cycles in a 2-rotor setup one face firing every 180* means it takes 1080* of rotation for all 6 faces to run through the full 4 cycles.

So to compare the 2-rotor to a 4-cyl lets use the standard 720* cycle and compare. If it takes 6 faces 1080* to complete their cycles, 4 faces will have gone through combustion in 720*

With that said, here's how I compare displacement of a 2-rotor like the Mazda "13B" to a 4 cylinder..

If each rotor face will run through a 40 cubic inch (~654cc) swept volume, and 4 faces will go through the a combustion cycle, with only two completing all four phases in 720* (same as the piston engine needs for two combustion events, but only one cylinder finishing all four phases in that period) that would give us the equivalent of about a 2.6L 4 cylinder because 4 rotor faces x 654cc = 2.616L

I think the old 500cc GP bikes could.

170hp from half a litre.

The amount of detail in this build is pretty decent ... and looks like it should have been done this way from factory. His other MX5s/Miatas have been decent as well.
