is the speed differential and someone less observant pulling out in front of him, those are two thinss beyond
the OP's control but what is not beyond the OP's control is to avoid getting in that situation in the first place.

The adage that no one automatically dies because of l speeding and overtaking going on on our roads
flies in the face of good common sense, increasing risks opens the door to other potential factors
creating a series of events which leads to tragedy, whilst speeding and aggressive overtaking by
itself does not result in disaster , the addition of other unforeseen factors can and will.
The whole thought process behind administration controls is to break the chain of events before
it has a chance to become reality, that's why perceived unsafe events like speeding are regulated.

I don't mean to sound like sergeant safety here, just an explanation of how a chain of events can be stopped
by seemingly unrelated regulations and hazard control that often make no sense on perfectly good roads.

I'm glad that the police made an intelligent interpretation of the situation and were able to give reasons for it,
this is the way good policing should be administered, delivering a strong but fair safety message on road sense and judgement.
good call - all of us have done things that can be considered stupid
passing a car at 140 seems safe, but as you suggested, if a driver ahead cannot judge approach speeds and pulls out . . . . . both drivers could have seen the possibility of this, so both are guilty

both the original poster and the copper deserve credit
one for showing discretion and the other for realising how lucky he was and not crying, moaning and complaining on a forum about revenue raising

Having driven a landcruiser(s) for the last 20 years, there is no situation I have been in where I needed to go over 120.
140 is ridiculous, if you need that sort of speed to get around someone you havent picked your opportunity correctly.
Clowns who for whatever reason plod along at 80-90 is frustrating. But, I dunno about you, I get paid by the hour.

Lucky you didn't get the cop with the chip(s) on his shoulder.

Otherwise, it would be 30 day impound and no license for you.

or maybe it was lucky the original poster didn't have a chip on his shoulder

i am not saying there aren't any bad cops, but from my experience, the average earthling has a bigger chip on their shoulders, than the average copper

Once again I question if this is a forum of car people or the APIA guide to being a good pensioner.

it is a car forum - some just respect the law and themselves
some just have little respect for anyone, but expect to be respected anyway

The highway patrol I dealt with when I had my accident got angry because I said I didn't want the other guy to be charged with anything in court because it was an accident and he didn't mean it, and he went mental at us both in the middle of the freeway.

The highway patrol cop involved in the Picnic at Hanging Rock, threatened to close the event down because the staff werent parking cars quick enough for his liking.

So straight away, negative perception, its like everything though, there is good and bad, so far I've only experienced the angry ones.

Thanks for your kind thoughts, MercurySilver. If I did 80 in a 100, I suppose that is way, way more dangerous than 146 in a 100.
By the way, your comment is a total nonsense.
My policy is keep to the speed limit, or 10k/hr less in wet weather or congested traffic.
I presume your in support of 146 in a 100. Bully for you, just hope you dont kill someone in the process.

i am not disputing what you have posted, but
you don't have a say in whether he gets charged or not - it is a traffic incident without injuries . . . your witness account is not needed
and maybe he had already seen an accident of similar magnitude recently where a driver was injured or killed (maybe someone the same age as his child)
their job of looking after traffic is much harder than yours of driving

Haha we both found that out in the middle of the freeway.

He ended up just having to write me an apology letter and do a traffic accident course, no license suspension or anything, so everyone won pretty much.

Really? 10k's below the speed limit in the wet? Keep to the speed limit all the time? I tend to drive to the conditions, watching everyone around me and hope everyone else does too as that's what good and considerate drivers do. And yes .... even if that means doing 105 in a 100 zone at certain times ..... and if anyone cannot understand why, they are the ones that should be off the road.
