Hopefully each organization doesn't pass the buck saying ring the other...

Maybe go in to the units and knock on doors to find who's it is. Tell em the cops came around asking who owned it because they were going to fine the owner and tow it. This way you will look like a nice bloke trying to help and hopefully they'll shift it.

haha, thanks for all the suggestions.
tbh I really dont want to call the cops, and its hard being new in the area, I dont want to look like an a**hole...
I think a knock on a few doors might be the best way to go...
or with any luck someone will steal it!

UUMMM, checking to the car out and knocking on the owners door.

Don't need number plates or rego stickers to do that either. VIN numbers are recorded and police have access to them.

Make sense?

Trouble is if you knock on the door and after 3 months it still hasnt gone then you report it, then they know it was you.
Just report it anon or something, but shire and Police will probably want your name, they wont divulge it.

Police have better things to do other than drive around looking for vehicles that look abandoned.

only 1/2 right. you can keep the plates and re register within 3 months but if you park on the road it is illegal and the cops can take the plates. if you intend to re register keep the car off the road

Was going to say just that. The owner has no real way of knowing who reported it. Just call it in and leave it at that.

If it's reported to the police, they're not aimlessly driving round, looking for abandoned vehicles. They are actually doing their job, rather than eating donuts.

So may I suggest, go back and look at what I have quoted, then comment, rather that try and entice a barnie

Why would they knock on an owners door on the off chance a car might or might not be stolen, and if it is not reported stolen no amount of checking VIN numbers will say it's stolen, the owner must report a car stolen for it to be on the system as stolen.

Sadly in order to get the Police involved the car must appear "stolen/ abandonned", have plates and be registered.
I have seen police removing plates off unregistered vehicles on the street, and then subsequently a few days later said vehicle usually is broken into and stripped.

While the vehicle has plates (even if no rego) they have 30days to pay the rego. Once its past 30days its illegal to have them on the car, so Police can remove them. It then becomes a council matter....
