Our old WJ Grand Cherokee wasn't bad off road, not serious 4x4 stuff though as it was just stock. Hate the way they took it with the WK and now the new 2010 ****, more like an X5

I'd like to get an FZJ80 Troopy for a trip half way around the block next year

Just have to convince the Minister for Finance/Secretary for War to agree to the acquisition. It may come at a price though - parting ways with my ZX6R (see avatar)

Until recently I assumed they went out of bussiness because I hadn't heard much about them for a long time. Then a couple of months ago I was talking to a bloke I know and it turned out he is a sales rep for them, so his daily drive is an Oka (company car). Apparently most of their sales are for the Asian market now days.

Ouch.

That looks like one of those unibody SUV's, way out of its depth towing a van bigger than my house.

Probably the former. This one decided to overtake the 'van in front of him. Unfortunately when he stuck his nose out for a look there was a B-Double beside him.

Actually, that looks like the van's roof next to it (its a pop top) and the arms are the raise-lower bars. Looks like it just flipped right off.

Dibs on the gas bottle.

Let me know when you wake up from dreamland

Theyre no bigger/slower or harder to see around than a van, which are usually running around with only a driver in it anyway. Actually most 4x4's will outperform family cars and vans in both power and economy AND can be used to get the family out of the house. Maybe even peel your kid's eyes off the TV for a few hours. People have a choice of what they want to purchase, alot of our other choices are being taken from us, why add to the list?

Default Best 4wd

Hi guys & girls,

My first post here, long time reader. Best 4wd in my experience was manual 2H 60 series landcruiser. It had everything you need: live axles, excellent articulation, separate chassis, torquey if slow diesel, decent low gearing, LSD, supple suspension that worked very well offroad and made for a less harsh on road ride (stock seats could get uncomfortable though). I took it around southern Australia and surveyed over 1000 sites sometimes through the most hardcore 4wd tracks to get there, and it was so reliable. What a job! 9.5-12.5L/100km, if you can believe that. I'd argue that in a lot of rocky track conditions, you are not going very fast at all - to do so would be bone-jarring - and low down torque is vital, so the 2H was fine. 2 flat tyres and frayed wiring to solenoid on starter motor in 16 months of hard work, when it was 17 years old to begin with! It had gone to the moon (circa 400,000km) and was on the way back when we parted. Interestingly, we realised our life did not need hardcore 4x4 after this contract and so replaced our Falcon and Cruiser with a Territory AWD, which has been fantastic. Love the inline 6.

Anyway, this link pretty much summarises what I think is the recipe for the best 4x4 ever made.

http://journeytoforever.org/landrover2.html

If the need arose, I'd have a 40 or 60 again in a flash!

What do you reckon of the chances of a civvie version getting made one day? I mean, it wouldn't need any of the armour plating and other "full military" stuff, and the interior is large enough to be a self contained living unit with the bonus it would go anywhere!

If you took out the 'Full military' stuff you would have so much more room on the inside! but as it is it wasnt that big inside withe the seats going all along the walls and having so much radio gear and what not
The coolest thing tho
The radio communication helmets
because its so god danmed loud we all needed helmets with a comm system to talk to eachother!
Next year when im in the forces im so gonna try and buy a shell of one >.<

Me love seeing pics of wee little 4x4s pulling big vans in accidents
(I hope everyone survives of course)
Just makes me larf when they dont have common sense
Ive seen rav 4s pulling 22-24 foot vans
Got outta there way real fast
Seen an ef falcon pulling a 26 foot van, well dont know how it did
I seen it busted up on the side of the road
Mandatory licenses for trailer over certain size or weight then it would limit these accidents

Call me a wee old fashioned here
Real 4x4s have full chassis
Preferred tow beast full chassis also

licenses is going a bit of the top to pull trailers, but making the laws stricter on using the right tow vehicle would be a good thing. I pulled a 19' camper with my F150 and it wasn't even fitted with anti-sway bars or a trailer brake controller and it was totally fine! A 26' with a Falcon is asking for trouble. It's not even the weight that's always the issue. You can have a totally light weight and it could sway around like a kite because of the lack of aerodynamics. Sometimes I think more weight would help it.
People really should use electric trailer brakes, stabilizer bars and if available, a 5th wheel hitch. At least two axles on the trailer. When you have the right setup, towing is a breeze.

People would proabably just buy an OKA, or a truck based MAN or Merc 4x4.

Ive sold a Crew Cab 15t 4x4 MAN to a fella who built a mobile home on the back of it and uses it to go around with his racecars...
