Does it include the sound of a Clevo? I think that is iconic, especially amongst people in the mid 30s and up who grew up when they were plentiful. Escort and Falcon Sundowner panel vans. Another iconic thing was the british door handles used on Cortinas and later XD/E/F Falcons that used to snap when the doors sagged. Another I can think of is the EA Falcon, but that is for all of the wrong reasons......

Tis interesting to note that most of the stuff talked about here is old, old school, or stuff from the last 10 years. how both some of the iconic stuff from the 80s / 90s, as well as some of the models other then falcon/fairmont?? Surely there's iconic elements in these as well.

To be honest, I am not sure if there is really that much from that time period. When you put this thread up I had a flick through some of my ford books to get some ideas. It seemed that the 60's and 70's were a monumental time period for ford design and all their cars had a clear ford DNA. This carried on to some degree with the XD, XE and XF as ford retained the large car, square lines and similar wheel designs to the previous decade. Then in the late 80's with the release of the EA and the VN, the ford DNA was lost a little, both ford and holden moved in the same direction and the individual design elements were not retained. I thought about the vents on the EA C pillar and the letterbox grille but discounted these as "monumental" elements of ford DNA as they lasted 1 model. The only real design element that I can see that made it through the E series was the low and almost level boot lid lines. Love it or hate it, it was not until the release of the AU that the design elements of falcon became more unique and easier for the average non car lover to identify as a ford from 200m.

Don't know if it's relevant or what you're after but the one thing that has endured for the last 40yrs without any real change at all is ..... the shape and position of the windscreen mounted rear view mirror. No matter what else comes or goes , that mirror is always there. You could take one from an X series and stick it to your AU-BA-BF etc. windscreen and it'd go unnoticed cos it's exactly the same mirror.

What about the colour Blueprint from AU-BA, made cool by the T3's and XR Turbo's. It is known as 'Ford Blue' to my mates when they see one and tell me about it the next day.'Saw a nice XR8 in ford blue yesterday'.
And rear wheel drive? Thats part of every decent ford.

Nobody has mentioned the side vents just behind the doors on the XB-C coupe. I'd say they are pretty unique to aussie fords. Actually, now that I think about it, pretty much all the X series "performance" car vents are uniquely and iconic-ally australian; The XA bonnet and front guard vents and XB-C bonnet and lower flank vents. I don't remember seeing them on any other non aussie ford, unlike the shaker (mustang) and even the c pillar/rear quarter profile of X series coupe which came from the Torino didn't it?

talk about a puzzler..but you have me thinking.
With due repect to other vehicles my thoughts go straight to Falcon and its derivatives, Fairmont Fairlane Ute GT etc. My 1st thought was over the years was the blue oval badge, but even that doesnt go back past XC update. Anyway there are some things that stick, The 'umbrella' underdash handbrake, can you here it click? Clevo sound, Superroo logo 2 way tailgates on xa xc wagons Panel vans utes Column shifts Globe wheels bench seats driving lights on sports models, real bolt on xr-xy xd/xe intergrated xa-xc and of course quad lights on XR's the 4.0 litre six i know there is more and its killing me ...

recessed rear window on XW/XY
that panel line in the middle of the rear door that goes up on a raked angle to the front blinker on XW/XY makes it look like its under power even when parked love it. in general the head lights the premium models usually have extra spotlights XT-XB GT's and cobra XE E.S.P extra light built in there's definitely a theme there, continued on with the newer stuff. jak

I think Ford design has been a little disappointing this century; the cars look great but there's nothing iconic about them, nothing like the Fords of the past. From this century, the only iconic design element I can think of is the XR teardrop headlamps. Everything else is vanilla, alot of other carmakers have bonnet bulges and scoops etc, but the teardrop design on BA+ XRs and FPVs is something FOA can call their own - you won't mistake a car with teardrop headlights for anything else but a sporty Ford. The body of the Falcon since AU has been generic and forgettable, the rear has been a bit vanilla, interiors have been nice, but nothing "different" from what everyone else has been doing.

I would say the BA/BF bonnet bulge is very unique and easily identifiable. As an exercise, graft that bulge onto any other car and even people that don't love cars will identify it as a falcon bulge. Even the FG, with the different design to the bulge managed to retain the DNA.
I agree about the iconic design elements being a bit light in the last decade, I would actually extend that and say the height of unique ford design was in the 60's and 70's.

Or it in bits rattling around in the door. It's the one common thread that connects every owner of a Ford of that particular era. No matter if it is a Cortina, Falcon, Fairmont, Fairlane, LTD or Ute, providing you have had it long enough every single one of you would have had to fix the bastard things.
