I called my (future) father in law and said i needed to speak to him in private and was coming over.
He was wondering what was up, when i got there walked out to the yard and i asked him for his daughters hand, he said "oh, is that all ?...er..ok, go on then" and shook my hand

Paddyboy he most likely expects it so don't be too stressed if you are on good terms with him.

It's a little old-school isn't it? I dont know anyone who has done this sort of thing.

I'm lucky, if i stay with my girl and finally make a honest woman out of her, i wont have to ask her dad, as no one talks to him

Congrats mate

I've never understood the idea of asking for blessings/permission though. The reason I say that is it is not like the whole idea rests on their blessing/permission because you love her and feel that way regardless and that is what you want and not like you won't ask her if he don't like it.

Maybe it's just a traditional thing I will not ever understand :

Congrats mate. Good luck for the big one!

Yes, I asked my now father-in-law before I proposed but we had been together for years anyway and it was just kind of expected we would get married. For me it was just a respect thing.

For me meeting the parents for the first time was a bit more daunting, especially as I was a long haired young bloke with a big van! My now wife got me to drop her round the corner for some time before that!

That was gold though ZC001.

Again all the best mate.

congrats mate.

i did the same three years ago.

i waited till my missus went to baby sit some spoilt brat she knows and then ask her parents over to a cafe at maroubra down from their house.

to say i was crapping myself is an understatement, my inlaws actually thought i wanted to pull out from buying our unit so it shocked them more when i asked for their blessing.

now, nearly two years of marriage, our own unit and looking for a house and hopefully little dan b's running around soon : :

plus my father in law is a car nut (he bought us tickets to top gear live) so we get along like a house on fire.

congrats mate again. keep us informed with the answer on friday.

It's a good idea to ask the GF's Dad first - gives him more time to come up with the cash for his half of the wedding!

Mate I know all about the daddy's little princess syndrome. My ex gf was the same. Apple of her dads eye and could put no foot wrong. A very intimidating man to speak to. Both her parents for that fact. She barely wanted me to speak to them. But on the occassion when I did speak to them, I spoke maturely, wisely and sort of direct without being rude or blunt. Be yourself, try not to show any nerves and be straight out with him. Good luck.

On ya Paddy, you did the right thing. And for those that keep saying "you didn't have to ask the father" don't know much. It's all about the respect and something old fashioned called honour. Well done mate, you did the right thing as a man.

And yes, that was the easy part, now you have to ask your girl !!

I think it's just how im set... i've been with the same girl for 7 years this year, and her dad has been in the picture i think, a total of maybe 10 hours, out of it all.. If anything i'd ask her grandfather, sweet old dutch bloke, walks around in his clogs lol.

On topic though.... Go get em mate... be the man :P Don't let him scare you...

I'd be shitting myself.

So I take it she has nooo idea about ford forums then....................

Congrats! Whilst it is a dying "courtesy", it gets you in the father-in-laws good books.

The best of luck to you for the proposal.

congrats mate.
you did the right thing with asking first, as it's all about respect, which is something that is sadly lacking from alot of society these days.

my father in law is a really laid back kind of guy (you'd have to be with a wife and 5 daughters i guess), and when i asked him, he just looked at me and said.....
"what are you asking me for?? while your a nice guy, i think you'd be happier asking her (the gf) about marriage, because you're not really my type!"
i took from it he was fine with it all, and it's all been fantastic before and after then.

good luck for friday too.

i will share a story with you, in the hope this helps for friday.

i had been dating my gf for some time and decided to take the next step. i went and spoke to her dad, got that sorted. : went and bought the ring and hid it away as x-mas was approaching and thought it'd make for a memorable pressie.....only mistake was i took the mother in law along for advice when picking the ring.

well she couldn't contain herself and let slip that i bought the x-mas pressie from the jewellers. anyways i panicked that she'd work out my suprise before i had a chance to reveal it, so i went in , grabbed the ring and went to find her and propose...well, i caught her as she was bringing the washing in from the line...in the laundry. :

i got down on one knee and propossed....in the laundry. :togo:
she of-course said yes and we laugh about it now, but for a long, long, long time she'd constantly tell anyone and everyone the story of how it happened.

at the end of the day, even if it all goes horribly wrong, as long as your love for each other is strong and true, it'll all be sweet. :
