after reading here about jobs . lots of them are interesting . and varied . not asking how much people earn . this thread is not about that.
but what i will ask . as some may think the pay is great. others, not so great . who here that has replied already .and are yet to reply .

think that thier job is enough. to enable them to have a mortgage ( on a house that they live in), a partner, 2.1 kids and 2 cars. in a middle class suburb .

my interest is not political . just want to know . what people think of an average job these days . and what % of jobs allow for these basic essentials .
cheers.

Well, as I said before I am a mechanical engineer, albeit a junior so my wage is in the lower middle area for this profession.

As for a mortgage, I have already looked into it, and there is no way in hell I could afford it taking into account the bills and other expenses that I would have. My pay would need to double at least before I could live comfortably with a mortgage.

At the moment I am looking into renting with my GF, and even with our combined incomes it will be difficult.

Living costs are so far removed from the average wages these days, it seems near impossible unfortunantly :(

IR adviser for the NSW Government.

My wife and I earn decent salaries and have a small mortgage on an very small villa unit in the suburbs. That was hard enough but I really hand it to my mates and others that have kids (we can't) and earn average or below coin. I reckon its so freakin tough for many people to get a foothold sometimes - especially in Sydney. I appreciate the non-political nature of this thread so will get off my high horse.

THANKS . i'm on the waterfront . in the engineering dep. shift worker. i'm only just able to keep on top of the house wife 2 cars and 2 kids, in western sydney. in nice house . which is equvilant in price to a small terrace in the inner suburbs. we attained all this though , from the past. when we both had full time work . and no kids for 5 years after we married . also i started saving at 16 when i started my apprenticeship.
i'm not sure if i done it the same way today . that i could be where i am now ( moderate to high middle class).
to put it this way . when i started on the waterfront . in the same position . i was earning about 40k less than i am now . ( 15 years ago)
back then i was on par with mining and back bench politicians . now i think pretty close to mining but about 60k . behind back benchers .

Hey so it's not just me

Mechanical engineer also: Draftsman/Production Scheduler for 2 factories/Stock Controller/General Problem Solver, all while earning less than the average aussie wage (this is in a small company that turns over $1,200,000 per month). Geez engineering is an awsome payed profession!! Just got a second job and am now looking for a third....

Bought myself a BA last year and now I'm struggling to live comfortably while paying it off. And by living comfortably I mean things like buying new clothes 'cause all my socks have holes in 'em and my pants are wearing at the seams lol.
I'm single so a mortgage is way out of my budget, unless it's a cabin in a caravan park :evil3:

Full time accountant in public practice. I’m 24 with a wife but no kids...wife doesn't work as she went back to finish her degree.

Pays for all our bills and mortgage but not much left for the car...especially when the wife is planning a 2 month overseas trip for next year that will see a deposit for an investment property disappear.

So now back to work for me got to keep making that money!! lol
