I have never thought about it really.
Admittedly, I'm a Nazi when it comes to spelling and grammar. I DEMAND people learn how to use apostrophes, and that you're and your, their, there and they're, and where, we're and were are all used in different contexts.

But I have never cared about how to say the letter "H", because I never spell it, and I see no reason to single out the letter.

That's your problem right there ;) English is confusing by default. So many words pronounced the same but mean completely different things. Just try and explain there, their and they're to someone just learning the language - if they don't slap you then you didn't explain it right.

You forgot wear. :P

Then you have words that are spelt the same but have different meanings and often even pronounced differently.

Invalid
Object
Produce
Refuse
Tear

I'm a bit of a Nazi too (or is that to, or two). This is a textual medium and if I have to reread a sentence due to multiple spelling mistakes, SMS speak or poor punctuation then I tend to zone out for the rest of the message. If English isn't someone's first language then I give them the benefit of the doubt.

I don't even SMS speak on my phone!

I don't SMS speak on my phone either.
T9 doesn't include apostrophes in its words, so I manually put them in.

I also love people who "loose" the ability to tell the difference between loose and lose.

I am only of average intelligence (as most people are), and I don't find it hard.

Can of words opening now. SPC or Heinz?

Eh, i wish i had never opened this thread. I'm getting flashbacks of a replacement teacher i had at primary school. She was about 100, had the beehive hairdo and shrill voice. Always pulled us (8-10 year olds) up on everything... Even got me on the word (as i said it) pro-nounce-i-ation. But that was wrong apparently it is pro-nunce-i-ation.
She was that bad i still remember her!

an old subby gave me detention for explaining what MYOB stood for (Mind Your Own Business) ((the accounting software)).

There was simply no telling her that that was what it actually stood for. Old beeatch shouldn't have asked!

See my message above. It's a word with several meanings. I figure that it gets pronounced differently to differentiate between those meanings even though the context is obvious.

Here is one I was shown years ago to stress how important correct grammer and puncuation are. Its amazing how much a single comma and a couple of capital letters can totally change the meaning of a sentence.
Example
Put correctly the sentence is.

I helped my Uncle Jack , off a horse.

Without puncuation

I helped my uncle jack off a horse.

Same sentance totally different meanings!

That depends on who you ask lol :

Does any one recall when the insurance mob HIH went under a few years back? Just about every presenter was saying "haytch eye haytch". When you compare that with saying "aytch eye aytch", the former takes alot more effort to get off the tongue. Another thing, or fing, that annoys me is that. TH does not make F. I realise it is a speech impedement so I don't mean to offend anyone but again, it takes more effort to say "Free" than it does "Three".

I've lived, gone to school and worked all over Australia. Generally, I've found that it does depend a little bit on where you come from. When in Victoria you do hear Haytch more often in SA you hear Aytch a lot more, similarly in NSW.

I'm a South Aussie, I was "dragged" up saying Aytch and old habits die hard.

Thats my 2 cents for what its worth.
