Anyone who has the desire to pick fights on the street should most certainly question what the real motivation for any kind of training is.

If you live by the sword you die by the sword.

I have been considering starting MMA lately, i have learnt the basics of Muay Thai a few years back, but a car accident stopped me from continuing.

My boss also trains in MMA and is one of the best in australia, so its a good place to learn from lol

all this mma beats boxing, boxings better than mma blah blah blah

In a boxing match a boxer beats a MMA fighter, In MMA a MMA fighter beats a boxer its all relevant.

If you are training so you can get into streetfights - one day you will get smashed. Whats the point?

Can anyone recommend an MA to help with my arthritic pain in my legs and shoulders?

I was born a natural Thai so I tend to want to try that but I fear that could be far to aggressive.

Yep, getting a mix or blend of experience is worth while.
San-chi-kai is a v good freestyle martial art that uses elements of quite a few different traditional style martial arts, its modern and an open minded style.

You must have been an asset to have in the industry...... : ....not.. Did the same job for 6 years in a fairly notorious area and didn't get involved in one fight. 'Cause it takes a heap of skill to belt the shite out of an intoxitcated person when you are sober......rather than being able to negotiate with them or escort them out in one of 'those' holds that don't work. So your experience of training with MMA members obviously taught you nothing.

Sorry to get off topic but people like this annoy the p!ss out of me

Having subscribed to UFC coverage for a while I can say I could kick everyones ***, but I choose not to - say it that is! I'll leave that to those nutters.....

And to the bloke who offered the advice to go out and pick some fights, you're a big part of the reason we have police, locks on doors and a cricket bat next to the bed.

Traditional Karate. It's a way of life.

Either Okinawan, or the more popularized Japanese styles would suit.

If you want to learn to beat the crap out of people, MMA, or some of the other above mentioned arts are ideal, if that's your thing... But remember, like Spiderman's uncle said.... "With great power, comes great responsibility..." Cheesy, YES, but true nevertheless. Your instructor is EVERYTHING in this equation. Some of the people instructing these more obscure styles leave a lot to be desired... Ensure, whatever you choose, your instructor has a good reputation. Remember that you might end up, either consciously or unconsciously, adopting some of the philosophies of your instructor. Make sure they are philosophies worthy of you.

Good luck.

Have been asked today to judge at the NAS champiionship...National All Styles. Was a judge for 7 years and have been asked back. Comp is happening in October. Will be worth a look come the time.

I went to the National All Styles Championship in Qld in 2005.. was a great event. Being a judge is hard. My hats off to all that do it!!

Martial arts is a passion for me and will remain so...as for encouraging "fights" in the street to improve your skills...well this goes AGAINST everything that Martial Arts teaches.

If you want fitness, control of oneself, concentration...then martial arts is for you.

i used to do re tae kwon do up until 5 years ago, (injuries galore : ) it took me nearly 10 years to get my brown tip.

i loved doing it, mainly for the fitness, discipline and respect you're taught and not for the fighting (that was a bonus of studying it :evil3: )

also having the priveledge of training under one of the master rhee brothers is something i'll never forget.

if you do it, i'd also go to the gym 1 or 2 days a week for strength training and maintain a good diet, that'll be the key to getting the most out of it.

good luck with it mate let us know how you go.

Ive been thinking about getting back into some form of martial arts for some time now. Mainly just for fitness and weight loss reasons.

I did GKR karate for awhile years ago and never really liked the structure and doing all the katas. I loved learning the techniques and sparring but katas....no thanks. Boring and pointless is my mind. Which is why im leaning towards Muay Thai or just kick boxing.
Something that has good techniques to learn and if needed can get you out of trouble but is something I can just use more for fitness reasons. Was also considering boxing but I like kicking. Its fun haha

I also dont think the idea of going out and looking for fights to make you a better fighter or proper warrior is a good idea. Your more likely just to get stabbed or something and end up in hosptial. Also look at all the one punch crap goin on these days. Even if you come up the winner you can very easily end up goin to jail! And thats just bad any way you look at it.
