I wasn't all that impressed with great ocean actually, way too much traffic and more a drive you grab a convertable and the girlfriend and have a quiet cruise. Black Spur is a wonderful road but again way too much traffic. Melbourne is just to flat so the roads on the outskirts don't tend to be that interesting. I haven't driven around perth yet excluding there all the other capital cities have better driving roads than melbourne. To get to the good roads you really need to travel about 3 hours and get up to great alpine, falls creek etc. Now it must be said that these roads are sensational however they're a day trip away, if you want to go for a bit of a drive at night melbourne just doesn't have the options all the other cities have.

Chum Chum Creek Road in the Yarra Ranges, The Reefton Spur just near the Black Spur, The Otways between Apollo Bay and Colac or the Road between Lorne and Colac, All much better drives than the tourist routes and usualy next to deserted.

Great Ocean Road is one of those hit and miss roads. I've had some crappy anger filled drives on that road stuck behind Discovery's and Pulsars, I've had 2 or 3 mind-blowingly brilliant drives on that rtoad with dream runs. About a 50% strike-rate. I visit GOR for the inland routes back though, on top of the sunny summertime cruises with the windows down. I miss the beach and the only way ot experience the whole "coast" thing is to drive down there for the day, hence why I visit regularly in summer. You can take the boy out of Sydney.....
