ok lets say this. is an auto that is fully worked (stally, shift kit etc,) going to be faster than a fully worked (not sure of the possible mods) manual?

yes it proberly will be faster, but more fun? dont thnk much can be done to the manuals, just strengthing i assume.

Yeah, since i got the tune thats about what mine stalls to.
The stally pretty much eliminates the crappy BTR takeoff, i gained a full car length off the line against my bro's car with the stally. Before the take off would be a little sluggish and i'd have to wiat till the cam gets goin before i pulled away, now i'm ahead of him from the word go. Best $381 dollars i spent.

Yes Auto Faster............

Here is the issue with a manual - ITS MANUAL

You have to MANUALLY stall it up, (you can get this wrong - burn the clutch)
You have to MANUALLY change the gears, (you can miss a gear)
You have to MANUALLY make sure you change the gears at the correct max power/max rpm - its MANUAL

If you want fun the put a manual valve body in your Auto so you have to change gears - benefit of this - NO CLUTCH - you will have the perfect stall everytime

There is no ifs and no buts, if your Auto is done right then the Auto will be faster.....

Funner is not FASTER and thats the question here i thought?

If you want to compare a Stock Auto with a Stock Manual then yeah maybe STOCK manual is faster as you can Manually Stall it up to the correct rpm, but add a High Stall to that stock Auto and you will then always see the stock Manual guys in your dust

champion. exactly what needed to be said. instead of starting another thread, how do you make an auto stay in the gear you want it in? e.g. i manually select third but if i plant my foot it will jump back to second maybe even first.

im still not convinced, maybe a auto with high stall and 4.11 diff gears would beat a manual, but not just high stall. he said he only gained a car length with the high stall, a stock manual would do better than that i would think, first gear in auto is way to long!

what if u get it right, mad launch with little wheel spin, dont miss a gear, and a really a real driver should be able to tell when to shift... so all things been equal, which is faster?

A stock auto will always do this unless you modify it

If you want hard and fast shifts get a shift kit

If you want to use the Auto like a Manual then you have to fit a manual valve body... then you select the gears with your auto shifter.........BUT I DONT THINK YOU CAN DO THIS WITH A BTR 4 SPEED - you will have to ask an Auto Shop if they can

Meh, what if....... What if your lane has a dry spot and more grip and the one next to you doesnt, What if the air going into you CAI is 5 degrees cooler that the air going to his, What if your sparkling autobarn sticker on the side of your car blinds the person next to you and he can't see what colour the light is.........

What if's can't be counted, like i said before auto's are fool proof, pretty much guaranteed perfect take off and gear changes everytime. Do you think a drag car would put a manual in his car based on a what if.....

But like you said if, just if the manual driver got every thing perfect and i mean everything, yes it would be prety close, but i'm still stickin to my guns saying the auto would be faster.

And a car length is a heap when your only going to the speed limit, just think from 0-60 and at 60 your already a car lenght in front of him.

very true, its a good gain considering the long first gear too, but the point i was making was just a high stall with standard auto would still be no match for a competent driver in a manual, buy the time u have hit 60 in auto the manual drivers in second pulling in the meat of the torque. high stall plus 3.7 or 4.11s are a different story...

No-one has asked the obvious question!
Do you want it faster in a straight line or around a corner?
In my opinion, if you want to get low 1/4 mile times, go a worked auto, if you want to race on a track where you have to slow down for corners, go a manual.
I have done manual conversions on a few cars because I find they are much better, you can ease off the clutch if you wish, with an auto, you just smash it back a gear and hope for the best. Driving around town, autos are good for lazy people or people that can't drive, you know, people that miss gears and don't know when to change. But if you seriously want to get the power down hard and fast, go a manual. If you want to point it at the end of a drag strip and press the go button whent he light goes green then go an auto...

exactly, well said! also worth noteing the manual box is soooo much lighter than the auto box its not funny, i could pick up the t5 by myself to move it around, but the with the auto 2 ppl struggled to move it, thought it might be worth a mention :P

You're not wrong there! My old auto is still lying in my garage, about a year and a half after we ripped it out of my car! I just don't want to physically move it, it's that bad!

it was so heavy, im thinking of lowering my car more cause its now higher! it was that noticable, and i have superlows with stockies lol

All this talk about 1/4mile, fast or fun....just decide what your car is... a drag car?/cruiser or a street car. what ever you decide the right gearbox will be obvious. I did the conversion and it was worth it but it also presented many many problems. Id like to see some 60ft times of a stallie auto. Mine was 1.8 in a manual with standard 3:4:5 diff, no wheel spin.

If you had to do a comparison you would have to have the exact same mods as you car and the only difference being one has a manual and one has an auto.

The Turbo boys with e-series regret changing their cars to manual when they go down the 1/4 mile as its unpredictable every take off.

If you like Auto keep it and trick it up

well i am 300km from the nearest legal strip. but in saying that i like to eat other cars at the lights. but, in saying that i like to take some corners nice and fast. gees i dont know what to do..........

if u dont know what to do then keep it auto, saves alot of stuffing around, eg. to get the right manual at the right price, i had to drive 1000kms for it.. but worth it hell yes.

You must be a little smaller than me. You are spot on about it being heavy, but I move the autos around by myslef. Bench pressing one up into position is hard when you are taking it in or out when laying on your back. The manuals are a lot lighter.
Oh, another bonus of the manual, it is a LOT easier to get in and out if something breaks. Do your clutch and the manual comes out a lot easier, ok, so you won't have that problem in the auto, but still something to think about.

I personally prefer manuals, but there is nothing wrong at all with owning an auto. Own what is right for you based on what you need and what you want.

how much does the auto weigh? i might weigh mine tomorrow to see, the problem is the weigh and the awkwardness of trying to move it, but it would be a good boat anchor.

Not a comparison just interested to see if they were slow off the line but bullet proof during up high and gear changes or if its quick in all areas.
