And I can do it all in my own car.

Another thing, don't believe a single word you hear on the news (probably not much different over there)

I could probably say more but it's bedtime, I've got a 6 hour drive ahead of me in 7 hours.

Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your trip here, good choice on choosing a) ford over Holden, and b) choosing to attend our great race. You have amazing taste
Yeah, Americans have a similar attitude. We've got a lot of land to explore, and very different cultures in the different regions. I've spent most of my life in the south on the east coast, and there's plenty to see and do.

I finally ventured outside the US in 2009 with a trip to Morocco. In 2010 I went to Ireland, and I've been to Canada twice now (to the nowhere region where they built my Crown Vic). I just want to see a V8 Supercars race before they switch to the Car of Tomorrow.

Mr. Niceguy
It's hot and humid here pretty much all year, and our weather is also highly unpredictable (but it rarely gets cold). We have incredibly violent thunderstorms, and I've been through three hurricanes.

And I think I'd rather risk a drop bear attack than deal with vegemite. Can't be worse than one of our chupacabras.

One movie that hasn't been mentioned is The Dish. If you're going to Bathurst, then Parkes is not far from there and probably worth a visit if you're in to the moon landing.
Another great movie is The Castle.

At Bathurst last year, we had lots of rain whilst we were there. Most of it was at night though, after the races/practise sessions, so it was only miserable at night time. On the Sunday, there was a strong wind blowing up over the mountain which caused it to be freezing cold. That was whilst the race was on.
Having said that, this year could be totally different!

Sebring is like that. I've been there when it's been cold, when it's been raining, and one year there was a full-course caution because part of the track was melting (it was 95 degrees that day).

What does camping at Bathurst entail? I've been told that a site must be reserved. At Sebring there is simply a designated area in a field. We drive in and set up a tent next to our cars.

Are there food vendors? Restrooms? Showers?

Camping is probably the best way to go for the true experience, nothing like being woken up by a thundering V8 tearing across the mountain.
It used to be pretty wild up on the mountain there is a bit of history about it here.
http://www.therealmountpanorama.com/...tory/riots.php

But it has gotten alot better over the last few years. There is still a little fun up there, but you wont have to worry about getting bashed or your car set on fire.
I camped up there and the worst thing that I saw was a guy getting chased by the police for trying to sell counterfit T shirts.

There are the usual food vendors like hamburgers, chips & rubbish up there as well as a bar, you are also able to bring food & drink into the track. If you are camping you are able to bring in alcohol, but its limited to one carton of beer cans per person per day :( You will be searched comming into the track by police & they are also pretty strict about drugs aswell.

There is also a free shower block & toilets in various places for anyone that is camping.

You will also be able to buy basic camping supplies at the track pretty cheap from a big tent that the sponsor "supercheap auto" has at the track.

If your on Facebook, check out this group, camping at bathurst
http://www.facebook.com/?ref=tn_tnmn...ng.at.bathurst

Also with watching the race, you will be allowed to wander around the track and view from different spots. There is a bus service from the top of the mountain to the bottom & if you get paddock acess you will be able to wander around the pits & check out the cars up close.

Hope this helps

Yes, very helpful! I'll definitely check the links later. Everyone has given me good information so far. (But do I have to worry about drop bears at Bathurst?)

How many beers is a carton there? At Sebring I usually drink 12–14 pints of Guinness a day.

It sounds like this is the experience I was hoping for. I know that grandstand seats at a race are a much tamer experience.

That's what I was thinking. Plus if I get a hotel room I either have to remain sober or catch a ride back and forth.

Are any of you going this year?

24 cans in a carton. You guys call them cases.
I don't think I'll be allowed to go this year. The birth of our first child is going to happen in May, so I don't think I'll be allowed a weekend away from the house after then.

Don't worry too much about drop bears. They are quite rare.
P.s. Do a bit of googling on drop bears and do a bit of research in to them. Wikipedia might be a good place to start

Going on Moby's previous posts, I think he's well aware of the XR6-T and its power plant.

doofeys right 24 cans, & so you can have one can every hour Thats not enough for some people though, there was a massive uproar about it when they introduced the limit a coupe of years back.

On the funny side I herd a story of some guys that went up there before the race & burried a pallet load of beer up there on there campsite one year.

Drop bears are quite rare, there mainly in forests though.

Good chance you may come across one of these friendly critters though if you end up going in search of firewood.

Oh, you may want to check out the chupacabra I mentioned on Wikipedia as well.

We have walking sticks in America. I haven't seen one since I lived in North Carolina, though.

And of course we have alligators all over Florida, but apparently they're much less aggressive than crocodiles.

Florida is actually the only place in the world that has both alligators and crocodiles. Somewhere south of me I think there's a salt water crocodile that coexists with alligators that live in brackish water.

Would you change the time when daylight savings ended? We breed them big down here. Keeps out all the tourists. That and having 7 of the top 10 deadliest snakes in the world.

So what's the good beer there? They sell Foster's here, but I've heard that's not considered good in Australia.

Nobody drinks Fosters here.

There are many good beers here in Australia. It really depends on which state you live in. Us South Australians will say Coopers, but people from the eastern state will probably say a beer from CUB (Carlton United Brewing).

Oh....and BTW, you will need a visa to visit. If you're not working then you can be issued with a 3 month ETA (electronic travel authority). From memory they are applied for online and are free. You won't have anything stuck into your passport though, just the receipt.

Others have covered most things already.

Cheers,
Matty

No harm, no foul on the Foster's—I'm sure we dump Budweiser on you in retaliation.

So the visa is back on! And here I am with MasterCard....

What kind of stuff that is small and lightweight would be good to bring for trading? I don't know what we've got here that might interest you that you can't get, but I'm thinking things like sales brochures, magazines, maybe some CDs or something.
