The AWD looks to be a very impressive capability on paper, leaves the FFG's in its dust just the way it should be.

Despite the cost overruns and the build faults, this ship will serve the Navy for 30 years and do it well.

It will also deliver a quantum leap in terms of capability with that 3D phased array radar, Aegis system and the new 'Romeo' Seahawks.

We should get more of them built.

Interesting article, didnt realise the Japanese subs are a generation older than the Collins.

News that some Liberal MPs are getting very nervous about an offshore build. Probably a lot of angry emails so far.

AEGIS been around a long time now, what close to 50 years?

I was controlling Seahawks 25 years ago, yes Romeo would be an update. Perhaps like BA to BF.... :-)

Hopefully it all works out.

Still pity the poor buggers that serve on it and the crap trips they get to do do, unlike when we spent nine months of each year partying around South East Asia :-)

He does make a valid point re: capability. Can we build a capable sub? I know the Collins won some wargames, but can we make something that will cut it in actual combat?

Still think we should build our own subs but i like this idea more than just getting them from Japan. I have a feeling that the Gov will just end up doing what the US want and go with Japan but.

Yep I like the German option too.

I agree that we'll go with the Japanese because there'll be a lot of pressure to do so.

Forget nationalism. Pay TKMS to build them. Get the best final product.

Find another way to employ the masses (the education system is the root of the problem).

Just in case you missed it here are the relevant parts...

Quote:
Kiel: The German company bidding to build Australia's next fleet of submarines will "replicate" itself, potentially in Adelaide, and transform the country into a regional hub serving the navies of the Pacific for decades to come, if it wins the contract.

TKMS' Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Hans Christoph Atzpodien said his company would make Australia a "regional hub" for shipbuilding, "serving the [navies] of the Pacific."

"This approach … is really about … replicating ourselves as TKMS in Australia, so we are prepared to build up another branch of TKMS which is very substantial, long lasting, with a long perspective, serving the Pacific area even beyond Australia," Dr Atzpodien said.

Quote:
"We want to turn it into a local hub for the region depending on other navies … so it gives us huge opportunities," Vice President of Sales, Robert Budell added.

"Australia has not built submarines for fifteen years now, so we're going to have to retrain the workforce, we want to retrain the workforce to build according to our process, our methodology, our process standards,"

Could turn into a money spinner for Adelaide long after the last sub is built.

Oh, I read the article in it's entirety.

I guarantee there would still be plenty of umlauts and eszetts on the sign in sheets of TKMS Australia though.

So the French won the contract. Subs will be built here. I think this is a good result.
