Im looking at getting ADSL2+ for home.
Im signing up online and have proceeded to the point where it asks what hardware you want/need? 1 Ethernet Port ADSL2/2+ Modem Connect to a single PC via ethernet port. (Network card required - not supplied by TPG) 1 USB Port & 1 Ethernet Port Combo ADSL2/2+ Modem Provides both USB and Ethernet connectivity I just want the basics to give me access? What do i need? Any help would be appreciated...Cheers |

Same as the other 1 but can also use USB, will it more flexible in the future with other computers.
1 USB Port & 1 Ethernet Port Combo ADSL2/2+ Modem Provides both USB and Ethernet connectivity

A network card is what you would use say in a normal office to connect to other computers/the network, if you get the USB and Network modem then you can use either, Network is recommended as the best set-up, but you can use USB.

USB connection is ghey... i have setup heaps of people with broadband, and have never had problems with using the network card. i have had people with problems using USB, i **** that off, and straight on the LAN, no probs...

Yeah I'd stay away from any modem with a USB connection... If it has to be a USB modem make sure its got ethernet too and use that.
Some motherboards have inbuilt network cars btw.. If you have a look at the back there will be what looks like a phone jack but bigger.. thats a network port  The one on the right is a network port |

Just get the one I suggested and one way or another you WILL be able to connect it up. You can always get a network card later if need be.

just use ethernet/LAN and the modem should automatically set as DHCP
also if it was built in wireless make sure to use WEP..otherwise anyone can gain access to your 'free' broadband and network..also its good to do mac address filtering but thats getting a little more high tech but its easy to do other than that any other comp can just plug straight in so long as there is another ethernet port how long do you have to wait? what is the plan your on?

I reckon it's worth going the extra for an ADSL modem with a built in 4 port router. The router provides some hardware security solutions that block out alot of nasties without the need for firewall software on your PC. Having both would be more secure though. Having the router means a 2nd computer (or up to 4 PCs) can be hooked up to the network and you can share files and the 2nd PC can use the ADSL connection as well. Whether these extra PCs are yours - added down the track or simply someone else's - it just makes connecting them up easier.
Ethernet is always a better choice than USB. Ethernet is more reliable. A network card if required would be around $10-$15 for a common brand like Surecom. If your PC is within 3 years old, chances are it will have ethernet built in to the motherboard. If you get ADSL2, and think you're going to get 24 M/bits a second, you'll be disappointed. Alot of users are maxing out a little over 5Mbits/sec. If you get more - great. Keep in mind it is still at least 3x faster than the common 1500kbits/sec non ADSL2 connection

And bare in mind that if you are on ADSL2+ and syncing at speeds less than 8Mbps, it's not a bad idea to set your router/modem to the ADSL1 (G.dmt or sometimes something else on certain routers) profile as it offers better stability on lines with poor quality or long distance from the exchange (which are often the causes for < 8Mbps)
