Default Wheel lacquer

My EB had Turboblades on it when I bought it, and I'm a tighta** who wants to make it look better without spending cash on new rims and tyres (I have no money :( )

What I want to do is get something to strip the lacquer off them (maybe including the white paint on the edges, I haven't decided yet) so I can polish the metal properly.

Can anyone see a problem with this? (wont rust will they?)
What should I use to strip the lacquer?

Some of the laquer has been chipped off from around the nuts etc. which was the inspiration, plus I'm told it has been done and looked cool !

I've heard you can sand it all back (with a low-grade sandpaper), polish it up and then cover it with a coat of clear. I'm thinking of doing the same with my turboblades because they are fairly scratched up.

And nothing is wrong with being a tightarse. At least you've lowered your car, which is more than can be said about me!

Trying to sand the laquer off will take *AGES* trust me I've done it and it's not easy! Just use some sort of strong as chemical, I heard paint stripper will work and it'll come off easy as, I just used something from the garage, don't know what it was though!

did you have to put clear coat over the top or just strip and polish?

Just a thought, but could you get them bead/sand blasted or possibly acid dipped. If I remember I'll ask my brother in law when I see him next. He works in the wheel industry and sends rims off to be repaired and repainted all the time.

I went to get some stripper tonight and was warned against it by the guyselling it at repco, saying it would destroy the metal...
It was labelled as "automotive and industrial strength", it he right?

I also stopped in at tyre power to ask the blokes there and they said if I strip the lacquer off, polish + re-lacquer it will show up dull as anything...which kinda defeats the purpose! They recommended giving my wheels to them to send away to be polished professionally, but at $150 per wheel they can kiss my a.......

Advice Please!!!

They definetely won't look dull! The difference is noticable once the laquer gets removed, and $150 per wheel is WAY too expensive you should easily be able to get it done for half that price.

I used normal paint stripper on a set Turbo Blades and it worked fine. You will need to spend hours and hours getting the finish you want.

A pro polish should only cost you about 50 a piece. It'd be 200 bucks well spent if you plan on keeping them.

Just your normal stuff from Supercheap or similar. It shouldn't cost much more than 10 bucks.

You apply it carefully and let it sit for about 20 mins (or an hour for best results) and it turns to a jelly substance. Then it's just a matter of wiping or spraying it off.
