Hi guys,
Those with the sedan Focus will most likely understand. When you have the rear seats folded down you don't get the full width of the car at the top because the frame has two curved bits on either side that the rear seats sit on. There is only a small gap in the middle where you get maximum height from the boot floor. Is it possible to cut away a small section on each side to increase the maximum height and width available or is it structural?

As it's of unibody construction it's all structural to some extent and removing anything without an engineering certificate is likely to making it a fail a roadworthy inspection and render it unregisterable. It's likely also a key part of the rear seat safety system stopping it collapsing in a impact. So you may make your car structurally unsafe and having zero resale value with the cut of a saw.

..and not to mention if anyone subsequently died or was injured in the rear seat as a result of it collapsing in an accident due to the modification you could be held criminally culpable.

you will need a VASS certificate in Victoria basically saying the car is structurally sound otherwise its unroadworthy. Have a look at the Vic roads web site on car modifications.
I doubt it will pass unless some strengthening is inserted after you cut the frame |

ok, thanks, looks like I'll definitely be leaving it then. Something to check when buying a car next time as it's a bit inconvenient and limits the utility of the vehicle.
