Default Phone Gurus - Galaxy Nexus

I just picked up the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus last night. I've had two iPhones - 3GS and 4, and decided I needed a change. Looked up some reviews and it seemed to fare pretty well.

Does anyone else here have one? If so, what are your thoughts? I am loving the big screen for web browsing, as I do a LOT of web browsing on it.

It seems to be a very good operating system on it, although I'm thinking it may be a little too 'accessible', and possibly more susceptible to bugs and glitches than Apple's iOS. Just my first impressions, who knows, maybe I'm completely wrong..

As far as scrolling and zooming, it is better than I expected, but Apple still wins here. It seems like Apple's device and software are just SO well matched and perfect for eachother, and they work so well together. I guess that's the advantage of the developer and manufacturer being the same company..

I've only had this phone for not even a day yet, so it's still early days. I'm interested to see how reliable it will be as far as stability of the operating system is concerned.

I am finding it more suited to me as a somewhat tech savvy bloke, everything on it seems to make sense, and is well implemented. Although if I were new to smartphones, I would recommend the Apple product. Way easier learning curve and is pretty much 100% flawless for someone who is going to use it for most of the basic features. I would guess the Nexus would be more suited to people who want to install all kinds of software and have freedom of customization etc...

Anyway, I'd love to see others thoughts on here.

One quick question - If you swipe to the left-hand screen on the home screen, what are those 5 or so icons representing? There's bluetooth and brightness setting, but what are the others for? I can't find info anywhere for it. Thanks!

I have a Nexus, those Icons are from the left, WI FI,Bluetooth, Location services, Accounts, Display.
I really like mine cos its NOT a iphone and with a little bit more effort you can do make it your own phone not a clone.

I used one for a while and now my girlfriend uses it. She loves it over her old iPhone. Once you start customising those home screens mate its hard to go back.

Do yourself a favour as well and download the Dolphin Browser - the swipe gestures in that are the way of the future I believe! Love them!

As always... Root it. You will have way more options in what you can do with it.

I have only had a play with a nexus in the shop purely to compare it to my SGS running ICS and it didn't really set my juices flowing. Sure it's a nice phone but it offers nothing new to me.... My SGS does exactly the same and is 2 years older.

I won't comment on the ifail ( ;) ) as I think it's clear which side of the robot fence I sit! Lol

I've had a nexus since November and love it, will never go back to an iPhone .

Only thing that bugs me about Android devices is the available apps, Apple wins hands down in that department. Apparently android apps are a lot harder to develop so they tend to be a bit behind and less stable.

Have to disagree about the SGS (I'm guessing its not a 2 given its a couple of years old). The screen on the Nexus is a million times better (bigger and AMOLED) and the camera leaves it for dead. Its heaps faster as well, my gf had an SGS until recently and it felt archaic. Each to their own though

Got a nexus and the thing is awesome, get in to customizing and you will be in awe. start with something basic like GO SMS Pro which basically allows you to customize everything to do with sms, including the msg icons, preview screens, change the colour of the led at the bottom for different people etc etc etc... I came from a Iphone 4 and will never go back unless something radical changes in apple-land

Interesting thread.

I’m looking at either a Samsung Nexus or an iphone at the moment.
I’ve never had a smart phone before and it’s interesting to read the comments here.

It's actually easier to do an android app especially as it doesn't have to go through apples retarded process! These days, what apps are on apple are on android, best thing is, just google the APk and install... Who needs iTunes!

In reference to speed compared to my SGS ( yup it's the first and not the second) my SGS is quicker, hence me comparing them as I am running cm9 and wanted to compare when it first came out as the rom was built on the nexus sdk code.... Just without the bloatware!

The screen, granted is better and bigger but it doesn't warrant me swapping the SGS for one. I believe the SGS 3 is due out very soon!

Forget Dolphin browser...Chrome is available on the nexus best browser by far.

Great phone and once you customise it you wont look back, everything just works. I love how easy to install Apps from your pc as well. If you havent already get onto Google Play and also appbrain.com will make life so much easier.

I got one of these about 5 weeks ago. I'd come from a HTC Desire which would auto reboot after 1 min of data downloading.

The first day I got it, the thing shut down and I had to pull the battery before I could power it up again. I've only just started to have major dramas with it. Most of the apps I've downloaded from play store stop working and close after I first open them up. I then open them up again and they're usually fine. Browser does the same thing.

Also being having problems with the messaging system freezing, and I have to pull the battery to remove it.I uninstalled all the apps last night and it's improved a bit, but still having problems with the browser. But the annoying thing at the moment is that when I was using 'The Chive' app yesterday, i accidentally pushed an add for battery juice booster. So now when ever I use the browser this app keeps trying to download to my phone disrupting my browsing. I've had Trend Micro on it since day one and I'm pretty sure it hasn't got a virus.

Will be going into Telstra when I finish this swing, to try and get it sorted and perhaps whirlpool forums.

I was so excited about this phone, but I'm starting to have my doubts.

Cheers, Evan.
