Just a quick question. My daughter bought me a fly off handbrake kit for my mini. It makes the handbrake like a rally car. Only locks when the button is pushed. Pull up to click off. Does anyone know the legallity of fitting one on a road car?

They make kits for them now? We just used to modify our own, and I cant see anything illegal about (as they weren't years ago) as I think the law just says you have to have a handbrake.

Fly off handbrakes are NOT legal in NSW, don't know about other states. The handbrake must automaticaly lock when pulled on.

quick pull on and release without having to hold the release button in, used for motor events like rally, gymkhana, drifting etc.

Some drifter's have both a hydraulic and normal setup in their cars...might need to look at something like that.

They are used for handbrake turns in front wheel drive cars. As you dont need to push in the button you can put the car into a turn, wrench up the lever as you put your foot down and spin the back end round rally style. I will have to do a bit of research here in W.A. Might just get another lever and simply unbolt the standard one and bolt on the fly off for any driver type events.

Sounds a little complicated. What we used to do before rallying was to tape a 5cent piece over the locking button. No dramas with rego as it would be removed after completion of event, cheap mod also

My daughters classic mini broke down (was the immobilizer). Was pushing the car off the road and a young chap stops. He said I’m a mechanic let me take a look at it. Told him what the problem was (about the only modern part on the car) he says open the bonnet then. We did and he takes one look and says where’s the computer? What’s that, pointing to the carb. Thanks mate! They are very simple cars, but do tend to go wrong more than a modern car

Just been informed that here in W.A. so long as they will lock on, which mine will, fly off handbrakes are in fact legal for road use.
