Default fastest model cortina?

hey guys just wondering what the quickest stock cortina would be in terms of 0-100 etc, one would think that the xflow six in the later models would be the one to go with? basically im lookin at restoring one and only working the motor cheers guys

AFIK the fastest STOCK Cortina was the 2.3 V6 (Cologne) this was a Mk4 / Mk5..

Worked on heaps of these... and crushed a few when I lived in the UK...

Cheers

I would have thought a 250cu in / 4.1 litre with manual box would have been fastest ex-factory in Oz. i.e. biggest motor available

Lead tipped arrow out of the box - budget some spend on the suspension so you don't end up in the scenery

You need to work out if you want just straight line performance or all around track performance....big difference IMO.

really just looking for straight line performance, something that looks like a sleeper, aside from a nice exhaust system hanging off it haha, any ideas on 0-100 times that would be possible?

i had a tc 4.1 ghia 3 speed auto , and my mate had the te 4.1 4 speed manual , they were pretty much line ball. later i had a te 4.1 4 speed man as well . it was pretty fast for a stocky . i measured around 7.5 sec 0-100kms hour .
i test drove a worked na one also , the owner said it was worked to the point where it was putting out at the wheels , what a stocky was putting out at the fly wheel , it was scarily fast that i did not buy it . it was also unable to be registered legally at the time .

also i've just come across the v8 conversion kits from castlemaine rod shop, anyone used one of these kits before for a conversion and what would be the problems with licensing a original 4/6 cyl as a v8 and such?

I've got a TE 4.1 that will do 0-100 in about 5.2 and Eastern Creek in under 2:00 but you'll need some serious coin, (mine owes me about $20k by now).

Cheap, Reliable, Fast, pick any two only.
I've always thought a Toyota turbo motor would be the way to go though.
Maybe in my next life.

"No truer words spoken in jest" but IMHO if you don't spend about half your engine budget on your chassis and brakes you're looking for a quick trip into the weeds anyway, every grand on the engine is another $500 on the chassis (not cosmetics or maintenance).

It cost me about as much to get the handling and brakes sorted as the motor did. Then about as much again get the cosmetics and finish right.
Just getting the balance moved to the rear enough was a few k$.

Personally if I was going to do a Cortina it would be a TE 250 4 speed, learned to drive in one and had a nice example years later, till the missus decided to smash it into the back of another car

from my experience ive had a mk2, a td, tc, and 3te's. i found the quickest to be my 4.1 te auto. but i had two of these, one was putting over 4car lengths on the quater against the other.
id recommend either a te or tc/td. if you wanna keep a 6 go the te, due to it being a little lighter then the tc/td. if you wanna go 8, go td. i have one with a 302, engineered. so its a project thats easily done.
if you stick to the te 6, i recommend you get a redline manifold, 350 holley, electric fuel pump and 2.5inch setup. car will rip and its at minor cost.

btw forgot to mention, for the td/tc setup you will need the front suspension off a 6cyl to do the v8 conversion. its easily changed, 4bolts and the whole thing drops down with the motor n all. get a 5stud conversion and put bigger discs on it, you will need a bigger diff unless keepin it a stock 8. other then that, keep the suspension up to scratch and sway bars, all bushes should be new etc.. these lil things count.
if your interested i have another td 302 for sale too. it needs a coat of paint, and put together and its engineered. or you can come to just see how its done. this ones running a 9inch diff too. looks like a dream in the making.

I would say the fastest STOCK Cortina in a straight line would be a TC optioned with the 250 2V engine if that engine was an option in the TC which I believe it might have been.

If it wasn't an option dropping a 2V head on top of a 250 is a bolt on proposition.

thanks guys for all the suggestions, looks like im goin to be trying to go down the v8 tc td road if i can, so the best bet would be a 6cyl chassis to start with and then move on from there (means the stock suspension can be kept for now), are there any hassles with dropping a 302 straight in? im assuming getting it engineered isnt too hard tina? given that the motor should fall under the max allowable for a chassis of that weight? and apart from removing the old 6 and changing the engine mounts is there anything else that needs to be changed with the gearbox? does it matter what it has in it to start with or will it all bolt up regardless? and i dont supposed you'd have any pics of your cortinas tina? cheers everyone

The V8 conversion is a easy do if you get a kit. Mine came with a Castlemain rod shop Kit, basic stuff like engine mounts Cross member and sump will be required, in the TE a Windsor V8 takes up less room length ways than the six

Im surprised no one has mentioned an XR6T motor. All the effort of putting in a V8 and I would think the turbo 6 would be a better option, both in terms of install , weight, power, plus if you get it from a wrecked car it will probably come with a 5 or 6 speed bolted up. These are dirt cheap on ebay and the like. Plus the tuning potential is insane with these motors. Even in stock form they would make a cortina an absolute missile. I have a mate in the early stages of doing this with a TF corty. Was a x flow 4.1 auto. He got a BAII turbo 6. it has a flash tune and intercooler/exhaust. Motor has 330kW and his corty weighs , I think 1280kgs? thats a pretty good power to weight ratio and it will drive as sedately as an everyday car. Plenty of options for you mate......some seem a lot better than others. Just depends whether you want a V8 under the hood, or if you arent too bothered by engine choice, just performance. If you left the corty 6 in there and spent money on it you could have a quick car but in terms of dollars spent for power gains, I think an engine swap is a better choice. Actually, even just an atmo 6 from a BA-BF falcon would be a good choice. Would also be very cheap$$$$ , much cheaper than doing up the cortys engine192ish kW standard. Would bolt in without too much grief and the stock diff would probably handle it......

hey tc and td are the lightest out of the big ones not te's and they're approximately 80 kilos lighter as a 6 im building one up which should make close to 350 hp at the crank close to 270 or 280 atw with a manual mine will have big brakes soon after i get it running and will be going back together with all nolathane bushes and whiteline swaybar to try help make it handle a bit lol you can sweet power even na 6 if you wanted go efi turbo possibilities are endless. as for fastest stock one id assume the last of the td's that actually came with a crosssflow this was after te's came out to get rid of the last td's towards the end of 76.

lots of f'ing around to get a barra in as far as i know you need to mod sump which is hard cos they're alloy also need to mod the fire wall which is illegal but ya know lol modded engine mounts aswell obviously. cheapest option would be to get a bit of work done to a crossie even with a few grand would flog alot of things mine is worth about 8 or 9 built but that includes all the msd ignition stuff and 750 odd dollar QFT carbie
