Hi there my au xr8 has over the last 10 000ks started to develope a wine in the drive line some were. Now it sounded like it was in the gearbox to me from 3rd gear up you can really hear it so I took it to my local mech and he drove it and said its got to be the gear box too.
So going on that info I pulled the gear box and got him to check it out and he couldn't find anything wrong but replaced the bearings anyway and said the gears looked fine. Bolted it back in and the noise is still there so what could it be ??? could it be the diff and the noise is coming up the tailshaft and sounding like its coming from the gearbox beacuse I am stumped everyone who has heard it says its coming from gearbox. Its a really metalic noise and say at 100kmh if i get on the throttle you hear it and if I back off you hear it, but clutch in you cant and in neutrall you cant. What could it be ??? Mech thought it sounded like a dry bearing. Any advice would be much appreciated Thanks

My Ute does this lately bothering me too hope someone has answers I don't tho experiencing the same thing 79000 on my clock yours?

Funny mine has 89 000 ks on the clock. Couldnt be spigot as it doesnt do it with clutch in i thought

could still be the diff even with it not making any noise with the clutch in. on acceleration or deceleration it's under load, clutch in there's no load on it, so you can't hear the noise. i'd get that looked at, there's not a lot else that can make that kind of noise under there...

To my way of thinking, it can't be the spigot bearing otherwise the noise would be there all the time.
I would put my money on the clutch throw-out bearing, specifically because you mentioned that the noise goes away when the clutch is depressed - the only time the throw-out bearing is in use! Pity you guys didn't change it when the gearbox was out, would have only taken a few minutes! Cheers...

Throw out bearing was checked and seemed alright. I would have thought the only time it would make noise is when the clutch is in if it is the throw out bearing.

i would check the diff. good excuse to put a different ratio in aswell

if its a sedan mate, perhaps it'd be worth checking the rear wheel bearings on it.

Try changing the diff oil and adding a Nulon additive as well . Should help quieten it down . Could just be the oil is really old .
