Exclamation Think Our Fords are Expensive to Service ? Check Out the Bugatti Veyron!!!!!!!!!!

The price of Veyron ownership

Richard Bremner
Most of us probably won’t be too disposed to sympathising with Bugatti Veyron owners over the maintenance costs they’ll face when running one of these magnificent machines – you practically have to be a billionaire to afford one – but you can understand why anyone might wince at some of the bills that Volkswagen’s finest can run up.

A routine service, for instance, costs £12,866 ($21,245k!!!)or the price of a middling Polo, whereas an annual service for a Ferrari Enzo is £1680, which seems like a bargain by contrast.

Buying new rubber for the Veyron will produce similarly heart-freezing bills, a set of four tyres costing £23,500, in part because they have to be capable of 253mph, more than 100mph faster than Concorde’s landing speed.

Worse news still is that at every fourth tyre change the Veyron’s rims must be stress tested for cracks – a sensible precaution in a car this fast – and replaced if they are found wanting at a cost of £7050 per corner.

For all these reasons, it’s not surprising to learn that one owner has taken to having his Veyron trailered to his favourite roads and following it there by executive jet, an arrangement that works out cheaper than driving the Bugatti several hundred miles to reach the dream Tarmac.

All of which is guaranteed to keep the Veyron out of reach of 99.9 per cent-plus of all car buyers, even if it should depreciate colossally. And, despite these maintenance costs, even that looks unlikely.

Top gear (or one of those shows) test drove two exotics owned by the same person (A Brit if mem serves).

They mentioned the running costs of the Ferrari (similar to above, which I think is very reasonable considering the car it is).

The they mentioned the Lambo, some 10-15 times more than the Ferrari for a service.

Would love to know what they do in a routine service on the Veyron to justify that cost.

Then again... I remember my design teacher telling us "If the owner of the local corner shop hired you for design work, you charge them $40 an hr, if the CEO of QUANTAS / Westfields walked into your office wanting design work you charge them $90 an hour".

The price of running these things ensures their exclusivity, justified or not.

imagine dropping one of those by your local Mechanics to be serviced
Mechanic: "so uhhh... We put a Hyundai excel engine in your Veyron
You "imsorrywut"
Mechanic: "Yeah apparently Repco doesnt sell carbon fibre titanium cored flux capacitor kevlar coated Spark plugs, in fact im sure they even exist outside of the veyrons engine... so we just put in something a little more easy to work on.
Oh yeah and we found multiple children that had been captured in your intake."

Thanks for the post csv8.
Good one XCwillo, "Yeah apparently Repco doesnt sell carbon fibre titanium cored flux capacitor kevlar coated Spark plugs"
I,ve been trying to get my dodgey old XF up to 18seconds for the 100km, maybe these will do the trick, where do I get them?
Veyron is one of my idol cars, as time goes by I think more amazing facts about this amazing car with emerge.

Thanks for that, damn....

I can afford a veyron, but the insurance and servicing costs are just a bit much, might look at a falcon instead...

Really a basic service is 20k? A whole lot more than a few L of oil and a filter must be going on, otherwise I'll open up my own stealership...

Ultra Tune? They'll even stamp the book.

I heard that VW lost millions for every veyron built. They are selling them at a loss. I guess you gotta recoup the money somewhere. Servicing is where it's at.

Can't beleive tyres cost so much. Surely a trip to tempe tyres would see you come out with some 24" Dolce rims at a fraction of the price.

Tyres HAVE to be minumum speed rated and load rated at what the manufacturer says, I assume finding a tyre capable of holding up to 400km/h isn't going to be cheap.

Even being in the industry I am still astounded at the cost of some car servicing.

Example one - my wifes 2009 Jetta - $27 trade price per spark plug....
Example two - I gave my son a 1998 C180 esprit - serviced it this week. Trans oil - $67 per 5 litres......thats trade price.

My other 2 sons are getting 3 cyl Sirion's when they are old enough, and I need to chat to my wife....

Sorry to hijack the thread, just makes it easier than starting a new one.

The reason the Veyron is sold at a loss is because it was made for the factor that they can say "we did that it is possible" before it becomes to hard to do it on a production car.

Like Clarkson said, with all these new regulations super-cars seem to be becoming a thing of the past. Damn you political correctness!

There is a 5 part documentary on YouTube regarding the making of the veyron. In one part they show you how the tyres (specifically developed and tested for the car) are made and tested. Watching this documentary will give anyone an appreciation of the cost involved with servicing and replacing the rubber as outlined above.

Link to part three of the documentary. Tyres start at about the 5:00min mark.

Watch the whole thing if you have time from the start. It's amazing.

Yeah for that pirce I don't want to sit in a little room with magaiznes and a cafe bar whilst waiting for them to complete the service.

For that price I would expect a full piano bar lounge with an open bar policy.

I’d be expecting a lap dance from Jennifer Hawkins thrown in as well.

I’ve fixed the link for you.

As you say, F6T, this is an amazing video and, in my opinion, a must watch for any car enthusiast.

The tyres are at 5:20, on part 3.

So one day I can justify the purchase of a brand new Ferrari California, and call it "a sensible option.:
