Default EF/EL Questions.

G'day all,

Well, ive been on the hunt for an EL/EF Fairmont/Fairmont Ghia for about 4 months now, and have found about 5 that i really want. All have between 150,000 and 200,000k's, which im fine with. But, by that time they will be around 10 or more years old, which gives me a feeling the Gearbox (Auto) may need a reco. Would that be nessasary? Also, has anybody had any problems that i should keep an eye out for, or keep in mind, like electronics or brakes? Also, is there any general recomendations that i should hear about?

Cheers, Jake.

hey mate, you wont be dissapointed with those cars but a few things to look out for:
-if it's a 6cylinder, the headgasket is gonna go pretty much like clockwork @ 200,000km's. if you find one that has been replaced (make sure there are receipts to prove it) then go for that one.

you'll know if the box needs a reco as the gear changes will be like a shunt in the bum! i'm not sure on the cost of a reco, i want to say $300-$500 but no idea why that number comes to mind.

You could always get a T5 conversion kit and make her a manual ;)

then things like the headlights might need a wash as they could have gone yellow, that sort of thing.

Stock e-series brakes aren't the best in the world, just see if there is warping of the discs (vibration when you apply the brakes). i upgraded the brakes on my XR to DBA slotteds at the front with EBC greenstuff pads, one of the best things i've ever done!

Hope that answers some of your questions

Thanks SgtBourne, yeah it is a I6 so i will look out for replaced head gaskets. I would love to convert it to a T5. i was originally looking for a EF/EL XR6 Manual, but ever since i saw a EL Fairmont Ghia with all the good bits at a car yard in town, ive decided to go for the Ghia. Yeah, i think the rear discs are solid, so i will definately be looking for warping.

Thanks for your help mate, Jake.

rears wont be as much of a concern as the fronts, if you have vibration underbrakes it'll be the front disc's that have warped.

and yeah a ghia with a t5 and some work like extractors n exhaust will definitely give you the best of both worlds
