Default alternater problems

hi guys my alternater has been playing up i put new belts on and it is screaming it head off and the gauge is flicking but then it comes good as soon as you idle the car it starts again is it time for a new one

Screaming its head off as in the belt is screeching/squealing? Tighten your alternator belt a lot more. They have to be b@$tard tight so their quiet.

You'll see on the alternator a larger nut and a smaller nut. You can lightly back off the tension on the larger nut and use a ring spanner for the smaller nut to tighten. There teeth on the inside of the bracket that the alternator will climb when you tighten. If you get the tension right with the larger nut the alternator wont move when you tighten the smaller nut. Once its tight enough, tighten the larger nut.
Hope that makes some kind of sense.
