Default How come these repossessed/theft recovered cars are so cheap?

I found a lot of theft recovered and repossessed cars on ebay and they seem to go for almost 1/2 the price.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1997-Ford-Fal...QQcmdZViewItem

Is it because people believe thieves tear them up?

Theives are not known for exercising due care when driving someone elses property. Also, a check on the vehicle records will always show that the vehicle has been stolen.

I had a look at the link that you posted, and for a car with no damage, there seems to be a problem with the gravitaionally challenged rear vision mirror. A mirror is minor, but what other undisclosed faults are with the car? It would be even cheaper if you went to the auctions and picked up the car yourself.

That El looks a fair bit bashed up aswell, who knows what conditon the engine is in.Also broadford car sales doesn't sell cars with Rego or Rwc,

Who knows what it will need for rwc? When i bought my old ED wagon it ended up costing me over $1200 to get the RWC on it, and my EB wagon was $700 if i remember correctly

So that probably explains why it is so cheap.

The cats have the guts thrashed out of them, so I doubt they will last long.

Also the car will have almost no history which also effects resale.

unless you're handy with a spanner or can get cheap parts, they're not a good buy.

That car looks quite rough, and I doubt the mileage is original - just have a look at that wheel for example. Broadford are also quite expensive considering they only sell the roughest of cars available.

That sort of budget will buy you a very nice EL Gli/Futura at the auctions, and you'll then just need to get rwc & reg on top of that. If you know what you're looking at, it can be a great place to get a bargain, but if you're inexperienced you could end up with a real clapper.

Hmmm what auctions do you mean?

I've only been looking on ebay and for a good EL falcon it'll cost me around $3800-$4000.

That's something with roughly 150 000-190 000 km's.

I thought ebay was the cheapest if there's other places I'm all up for it!!!

Proper car auctions like Pickles or Fowles. It can be a bit time consuming, but as long as you know what you're looking for (or have someone with you that does) then it can definitely be worthwhile.

If you're not all that experienced with cars though, and can't get anyone to go with you that is, then I would probably steer clear of this option.

Hmmm how experienced do you mean?

I can do basic things like check for leaks, change filters, fanbelts, leads, cooling and all things like that.

I have never taken the rocker cover off an engine before though or changed a head gasket.

But yeah I'll have around 3.5k

What could that get me at an auction roughly?

I was hoping for a EF/EL fairmont with around 170 000km's - 210 000km's.

How common do E series come across at these auctions?
