Default Terrible fuel economy

Hi Guys

Ive got a series 1 AU with about 284k's showing. ever since ive had it i get around 250ks or less to a tank around town. So far i have replaced the oxygen sensor that made no difference at all. not sure where to go from here. It appears to be running super rich at operating temperature it blows a little bit of black smoke but the engine does not burn any oil. Engine doesnt seem to miss has smooth acceleration altho i think its lacking power but have not driven any other au falcons to compare.

some suggestions on what to check/replace next thanks.

Your MAP sensor is dead, I'll bet money on it. About $150 to replace and all will be back to normal.

I think I'll have to have a look at this also. We recently got an AU XR6 absolutely terrible fuel economy, infact we get better fuel economy from our other car- a blown v8 calais, it just doesn't seem right but this is the first ford we've owned, always had holdens until now.

One thing that surprised me when my fuel economy went bad, I cleaned the air filter (K&N) and it went back to good.

map sensor. mine was $109 from ford. My symptoms were as yours, but i was getting better mileage when i gave it a solid run... about 250 granny driving, about 350 hammering it about..

Its a pain in the rectum to change, but well worth it

ive also seen fuel pressure regs stuck on AU falcons.. get a presure/flow check done 2.. when the reg sticks u get lots of fuel presure which doesnt do fuel econ any favours

Working at a fuel price of $1-20+ for a litre I'd say that's pretty good, and as far as the smoke you'd probably find it's just condensation of the hot exhaust gas with the cold morning air, quite normal and nothing to worry about.

as to the other issue of the thread I'd suggest checking your inlet manifold gasket for leaks also, common problem on the I6 and can cause the fuel consumption to jump

one other possibility is the coolant temp sensor (not the gague sender) if this is cactus it's like it's on choke all the time making it super rich
