Default Another cold starting issue... AU XR6 VCT

G'day people.

I have a 2001 AU XR6 VCT Ute.

When cold it simply does not want to start, always takes a couple of goes, and it helps if I pump the accelerator...

When hot the engine starts first kick just like it should.

The interesting part is that when cold, if I turn the key to on (without actually starting the engine) and leave it there for about a minute, and then try to start it, the engine fires first time and runs just like it should.

Now in my mind, this means that I am "priming" the fuel pump by letting it run for a minute or so, building up fuel pressure before trying to start.

I mentioned this to the mechanic who rebuilt my diff, and he said that there shouldn't be anything wrong with the fuel pump, because they either just stop working or work fine, there's no in between.. He suggested changing the fuel filter which I did but has not helped..

I have also recently replaced spark plugs, leads, intake gasket, cleaned the throttle body and air filter (K&N), and about 2 years ago I had the injectors reconditioned.

Any ideas?

if you think it's a fuel problem perhaps, next fill wack a bottle of fuel system cleaner in the tank, use the tank up and see how it goes, if it's no good start testing stuff.

I'd try mik's suggestion first & if that dont work a fuel pressure test could help diagnose a fuel system issue. Ask your mechanic about it if you cant diy, good luck!

Cheers, Maka

I think I read somewhere that there a gauze filter up at the fuel rail as well, but I may be mistaken. If it's there, maybe you should check that it isn't blocked as well. I'm sure someone will be able to confirm or refute if there is one.

Hi Wannabe.

My experience with the stock fuel pump is like exactly like your experience, not what you mechanic has theorised. The stock fuel pump will decrease in performance. I have had a 2yo pump showing signs of leaning the engine out on a dyno. I believe that you may be on the right track, by priming the pump and allowing the pressure to build.

Cheers
Stu

Sweet thanks fellas. I will try the fuel system cleaner and the regulator clean before spending any money.

Failing that, does anyone know if the fuel pump is easy to get to and replace in a ute, if I remove the tray liner first?

Ta, Mark
