Hey guys,
I've got a S1 Fairmont wagon that's starting to show its age at 350,000km and a mate has a badly bent S2/3 XR6 ute with extremely low kay's that he's looking to sell for cheap. I'm thinking about buying it and swapping the VCT I6, manual, suspension and better brakes from the ute to the wagon. The things I'm not sure about are if there'll be any issues between the ECU & BEM, ECU & dash etc. Any info or tips from anyone that's done a similar conversion or links to any threads that cover this would be much appreciated. For now I'll keep trawling through for relevant info. Cheers Mick |

The engine will pretty much go straight in, just use the VCT intake loom....
Also, AU T5 is longer than the AU auto, so you can either swap the AU box for an E-series box, or have your driveshaft shortened... If your car has smart lock, youll need to get an AU1 SmartLock XR6 VCT Manual ECU for it to all work....

You will need to change over the ECU and possibly the Smartlock system as well. If you have both cars there it will be a big help, I think the biggest issue you will have is the Smartshield system - Smartshield is AU2 onwards, Smartlock is AU1 and it can be a bit of a headache to change them over.

Use the motor and box with a custom tail shaft as a sedan shaft is too short.
Find a manual AU XR6 VCT ecu, Flash tune ya auto S1 ecu or use resistors to fix fan and idle issues with auto ecu.

Thanks for the info, every little bit helps.
The plan so far is to buy the ute whole and swap over as much as possible from the front seats forward while still retaining the Fairmont dash. So tailshaft, ECU and loom are all there. From what I can gather, the XR6 BEM won't be compatible with the Fairmont cluster or climate control. Or am I wrong? Would the easiest way around Smartshield issues be to source a S2/3 high series BEM or is it not that simple? |

XR6 BEM will not work in a Fairmont. They are definitely different.
