Looks like we're getting restrictions on what cars new drivers can drive. It says all non-diesel turbo charged engines. I wonder if this will include the new EcoBoost 4cyl soon to be released in the Falcon?

"Vehicles that have been modified to increase engine performance" ... that is a big can of worms right there!

They cant even get the facts right Vic has had this for years and yet you are the third state to get it after nsw and qld
It only affects those who get their license after the 4th sept anyway Jason

One wonders if old mate's 100kw V8 Range Rover will be banned while his neighbour's 190+kW Falcon will be allowed. I recall that took place when NSW introduced these laws.

everyone knows you can't kill yourself in a slow car!! that must be true.. right? non turbo cars can't hit a tree at 60km/h non v8 cars can't veer onto the wrong side of the road non modified cars are safe as houses!! apparently, with the introduction of these laws, we are only 4 years behind the east coast now in reality, i'm looking forward to the year 2000. s.a is really closing in! |

Seriously, however, I am somewhat in two minds. My first car was a Mini Clubman GT which topped out at about 140km/h but simply didn't have to slow down in corners. Just a couple of drops of well placed leaking oil from the car in front and I'd be well and truly wrapped around the big tree near Woonona High School. So there's the "smaller/slower cars can kill, too" side. However, IMHO it seems to be the turbocharged Jap imports (Skylines, normally) and Commodores that are always in the news, normally wrapped around something that got in their road. Is this a news conspiracy, that only turboed Skylines and Commodores have big car crashes?

Sure anyone can kill themselves or hurt others using any form of mobile transport, but that’s not a reason to provide them with all the necessary tools to increase the chances of this happening. I do agree that those P platers that are giving the undeserving ones a bad reputation will still no doubt find a way to make a nascence of themselves regardless of vehicle. As mentioned before I just don’t think we should be making it easier by providing access to vehicles that are more desirable to them to use irresponsibly. I can appreciate that this is a bitter pill to swallow for those young P plater drivers that love their car and do the right thing. As mentioned in another thread I to remember my P plater days. I was 17, owned a modified 351 V8. To this day I have no idea how I didn’t kill myself, or hurt anyone else at the time but see this as pure luck more than anything else. ****, I’m sounding old!!.

I think it's a bit of a farsical. (Spelling). A modern 4 banger, ala a toyota camry has more power and torque than an old XA 6 banger.
Geez, we drove V8's, with 4 wheel drum brakes that'd take half a mile to stop from 100KPH. It's not power that kills people. It's the loose nut behind the wheel.

What did Dick Johnson say years ago ..... "Ban low performance drivers, not high performance cars".
How about teaching the kids how to drive properly?? Nah, lets just wait until they turn 25 and then, magically, overnight they will gain the skills needed to drive a more powerful car. |

Civic Type R is a 4 cylinder FWD car, but you don't need to slow for corners in that thing.

Except turbos now have an exemption for things like VW's 1.4 TSI engines and diesel turbos. |

anyone would think young kids wanting to go fast is a new thing. ask your grandparents some of the things they got up to as young 'uns and it'll make todays kids look like church boys.
