Funny how Shell say that "Australians have the worlds forth cheapest prices" behind Mexico, USA and Canada.
Their graph seems to back up this claim.http://www.shell.com/home/content/au...ices_0116.html But a lot of the countries (with cheap fuel) in the AGE graph dont make onto the Shell one :

Government to the rescue::rolleyes:
Sunday May 25, 05:51 AM Labor to investigate petrol tax changes The federal government will investigate whether GST charged on top of the petrol excise should be scrapped. Consumer Affairs Minister Chris Bowen confirmed the petrol price inquiry will examine the "interaction between the GST and fuel excise and see if there are any measures that can or should be taken", Fairfax newspapers reported on Sunday. ADVERTISEMENT The move comes despite Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Treasurer Wayne Swan criticising Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson's plan to cut petrol excise by five cents a litre, the newspaper said. Of 149.6 cents charged for a litre of petrol (the average price in Melbourne on Saturday), about 93.2 cents pays for the product itself, 51.7 cents is absorbed by federal taxes, leaving a retail margin of about 4.7 cents a litre. And of the 51.7 cents in tax, 38.1 cents is taken as excise and the remaining 13.6 cents as GST, which is charged on the final excise-inclusive price. Of that amount, about three cents is due to the existence of the excise charge. The tax inquiry will more broadly consider whether the entire petrol excise regime should be scrapped and replaced with a specially designed environmental tax. http://au.news.yahoo.com/080524/2/16zuq.html

considering we are all obviously drivers. We all use petrol whether you have LPG or not(fuel for deliveries which effects goods prices etc) Can we THE PUBLIC do somthing to change the government Oil policies? Reduce the taxes etc? Why does our whole country have to suffer huge prices in oil when the government gets paid more and more? Certainly we can do somthing?

Fuel passes $2 a litre in outback town
12:28 AEST Tue May 27 2008 Bligh refuses to support any changes to GST on petrol. Fuel prices in a Queensland outback town have soared to more than $2 a litre, hurting heavy transport operators. Diesel fuel was priced at $2.02 a litre at the petrol station in the north-west Queensland town of Bedourie. Unleaded fuel was selling for $1.96 a litre - 59 cents more than the cheapest fuel in Brisbane on Tuesday. Diamantina Shire mayor Robbie Dare and petrol station operator said fuel prices were at record levels. "It's the highest (petrol prices) I have seen," said Mr Dare, who has been running the town's only roadhouse for the past 20 years. "Road contractors and cattle carters are the hardest hit. "Their fuel costs are cutting into their margins." Premier Anna Bligh said that while she was concerned the prices were high, Queensland was the only state to provide a fuel subsidy which kept prices down in regional and city areas. "We are really not in a position to do anything more than we are doing but we are certainly committed, unlike any other state in Australia, to that fuel subsidy," Ms Bligh said. "We will certainly work with those councils if there are things that can be done to assist them. "I don't think we should ever give up on trying to improve the capacity to get transport out there (in the bush) in a cost-effective way." Ms Bligh says she will not support any changes to the GST on petrol that take away revenue from the states. The Rudd government is considering removing the GST on fuel excise as part of its wide-ranging taxation review. The move would save motorists around four cents per litre. Ms Bligh said it was too early to say whether the review would bring relief at the bowser. "What I will be looking to see achieved is a fair tax system but one that doesn't jeopardise state revenue," Ms Bligh told reporters in Brisbane. "Any changes to the tax arrangements to this country should be fair ... to the individual taxpayer without any decrease that would affect state revenues. "I don't think the public wants to see our schools and our hospitals short-changed either." Ms Bligh said her government would respond to a recent independent report into petrol prices in Queensland in the "very near future". Last edited by omn1potent; 27-05-2008 at 02:27 PM. Reason: typo |

If you then compare the prices against GDP, yes we do pay fairly low prices. But then aging what would a citizen of Luxembourg want with 60l of fuel. You can cycle around the place in a day. Of course if you then compare the prices to the average amount of (litres per person) used Australia would be the most impacted. Of all the nations Australia has the most to lose with high petrol prices. We don't have a manufacturing industry and rail network to pass our transport business off to. People find it hard to believe I drive 600k to visit the dentist, buy some jocks and see a movie, high fuel prices will kill the bush, or bring back Cobb and Co

If the Fedral government subsidses everyone by 3c then Queensland Government will be directly forking over 11c a litre. So its more than likely they will not pass on the 3c discount in Queensland.

YES fuel prices suck YES it costs you an arm and a leg NO you dont have the right to a v8, it is a privelage NO WAY IN HELL would you do any bloody different if you owned the fuel company. This is something iv'e wondered about for awhile now, maybe a forum user can
enlighten me?.Why is it that a 5l container of motor oil bought 7rs ago say for around 30 bucks, still costs around the same today?.I'd have expected it to have gone up by at least a similar amount in percentage terms as petrol ie somewhere around 100%? Any ideas?

Spare a thought for us poor people that run diesel cars. It's over $1.80 per litre now. I can't understand how diesel can be that much more expensive than unleaded?

i think its a more expensive process to make diesel, or the oil thats used in it is more expensive(there are different crude oils for different things)

maybe they import more diesel and get a better price? im guessing here, but it probably has somthing to do with supply/demand, europe has alot of diesel hatches 4cyl's ie volkwagens, volvo's audi's etc etc and, not to say we dont but id say they have a higher concentration of diesel cars compared to us. Also, shipping routes would be a decrease costs for them as they dont have to travel halfway around the world? just a couple of idea's but i really dont know for sure

Unfortunately a demand for small diesel cars exist (why would manufacturers be pushing for diesel power otherwise??) and so obviously "they" (i don't even know who "they" are anymore!) have found a way to cash in on the 'diesel craze'.... Im betting that 4cyl petrol cars, in the next couple of months, might outsell their diesel competitors.. Bottom line is that the govt can sqeeze every cent out of us by putting petrol prices up.. We need fuel to get to work and to operate businesses! Sure we can argue till we're blue in the face but they have us by our ***s.

Just got back from a work trip overseas, Got Home after 30hrs on the go, sleep deprived, smelling of a mixture of B/O, deodorant and Alcohol. fairly annoyed that my luggage never made it onto the plain in Switzerland and is probably now residing in a airport in Germany, i pulled in and filled the T up at 1.61 a liter, the Words F**^ing C*&^'s was used as the nozel was lifted from the bowser.
This got me pondering I was sitting in my Hotel room in Spain early this week watching the upward march of oil on CNN then just as evrybody started getting real ticked off with it all, what a shock it stops at what $140 a barrel and just *(&^% plummets back down to what $127 in 2 days. You carn't help but think halve this chit is caused buy the media hype and outrageous perditions buy analysts who must have got there qualifications on the back of a cornflakes box then oil company's using this and seeing how far they can push before the public snap to create a new "acceptable price" that we will pay. .

Interesting listening to most of the city based people whinging about paying around $1.50 per litre.
Have a thought for the people in rural Australia.. We are currently paying the following: ULP $1.99 per litre (Just went down a bit it was over $2 also) Diesel $2.10 per litre There are plenty of other members on here from rural locations, what are you paying? |

Some interesting info on peak oil on Wiki.
Link Here Arguments for and against the "realities" of peak oil, but some concerning points in there none the less.
