i've actually been looking at doing (or attempting this) for quite some time now. BA stockos are cheap, and the possibilities are huge... but i dont want to lose my sexy vct rocker.
*** for the ecu not being able to control vct? what about an au vct ecu? ( i know theyre sohc, but maybe it could be modified to control it?) and surely you can get a ba ecu and disable everything but engine management? the edit has been amazing so far, maybe it can do just a little more? the auto trans works on road speed/tps to determine shifts, not engine load/speed, so the auto box and the engine dont need to work (or just get a manual :P) I'll definately be one of the earlier travellers down this route.. ive opened a new savings account and named it "engine fund" :P and finally, how come the dual vct being disabled would cause flat spots/poor performance? I've disconnected the wiring to my vct, and the car just doesnt rev as hard, but performs well in any case... food for thought |

^^i think it was mentioned above...the dual vct, it seems, is also somewhat mechanical as well as computer controlled

Just a thought. With the idea of running a ba and au ecu to control different functions of the car/engine, would it be easier to simulate the unused components of the ecu rather than try to edit them out?

For the benefit of the only non-tech AU owner here, me, please explain in simple terms why this story is generating so much excitement and interest.
Thanks

I would imagine that the BA motor is more efficient with its power and fuel economy. Is it more valves per cylinder, double variable cam timing, etc? An evolution up from the AU VCT.

exactly. and if the ba ecu can be used, ba turbo motors are just one step away.
If the dvct can be working, its the guaranteed cheapest 30kw you will ever get. Same reason why many people creamed (and still do) over the au vct... its just an extra bit of goodness into an already awesome car |

The BA head wont fit the E-AU series block so you need to swap the whole engine. Then theres the Engine management issues and engine accessories to worry about. Bottom line you can spend thousands like me tuning up the SOHC engine to give 140rwkw or just buy a BA engine and fit it and you would have about the same and a nice new engine to boot. |

AU VCT and BA DVCT are completely different. I doubt there is any way to get the AU ECU controlling the BA DVCT properly.
BA conversions seem to be the new fad. Getting one to work with the stock ECU will be the real test. My engine and box are already bolted in, waiting on my new intake and exhaust manifolds then Im an ECU away from having it all working.

Has anyone successfully made this conversion and got everything running smoothly with an E-Series yet?

it can be done with the BA ecu with a lot of wiring , i spoke to capa a little while ago and they were talking about getting a wiring harness made that would make the whole thing stand alone. basically hook it up onto the ba motor plug the PCM in and a flash tune and bingo!
i havnt spoken to them in a while to see how its all going. |

I sent them an email asking about that yesterday. Have to wait and see what they say.
What are the chances of getting a complete loom from you guys, Darren? Maybe it possible to dissect what is needed after some messing around. Im nearly at the ECU stage now.

its possible, and at a reasonable cost, but the killer is time... when i get my beamer registered, ill rip into it... i think 6 months would be enough to iron it all out.
i'm thinking of getting the loom and bastardising it, then mounting it in the engine bay in a convenient location. but that mean i wont have easy access for editing... ive got dozens of spreadsheets and plans oing on this... |

What is there to document? Engine going in is easy. ECU a bit trickier.

basically im trying to document it into as much of a step by step process as possible, to minimise my work and downtime. essentially im trying to get it done on paper then implementing thaat into reality... As you said the ecu is trickier

Very interesting reading.
Any updates on ECU? Whats the go with getting the DVCT working in the AU? Would an aftermarket ecu like wolf, motec etc be able to run the DVCT and rest of the car? Just interesting reading for now but later on...you never know.

If some one is serious about this maybe its time we brought BOG into this to give expert advice about the BA ecu's.
