The DOHC 5.4L V8 is going to be a problem, and a (the?) reason why is pedestrian safety.

It just sits too high. Ford is going to have problems designing crumple zones for pedestrian safety. While Jag is developing pyrotechnic bonnets which may or may not get around this problem, it would add thousands to a V8 price which already costs thousands more.

The DOHC 5.4 is already at the peak of its natural development, there is no way to get more power without compromising emissions, reliability or driveability. EURO IV emissions would kill it off completely.

Not to mention its fairly expensive, not that powerful, big and heavy.

The 5.4L SOHC is more emissions friendly, makes simular torque and can make simular power. Power jumped 10kw in the last face lift, I would image theres atleast another 20-40kw sitting on Fords desk awaiting new models and facelifts.

I honestly wouldn't be suprised if the FPV range switched to a 5.4L Supercharged V8 until a new V8 engine is developed. The supercharged V8's would offer more power (~330Kw) more torque (~600Nm), substancially improved driveability and acceleration.

They would be more expensive than even a GT-P even in basic trim, but the F6 range would still give FPV a foothold in the volume market. Still which Ford fan would be disapointed with a 330Kw supercharged 8 leading the range?

Another option is that FPV get a slightly enhanced alloy SOHC 5.4 V8. But this would be a hard case for marketing with a power deficit over the previous model and competiting products from other marques.

Ford US has no replacement V8. The current modular motors are the only choice if Ford Australia wants a V8. If they don't want or can't have the the 5.4 or the 4.6, then they won't have a V8.

In HSV form it makes 398hp 391ftlbs. That's 297kW 530Nm.

Why? Commodore and Corvette are very different cars underneath and therefore the exhaust system layout differs. They did not deliberately de-tune anything.... :
Theres no doubt if the LS1s are anything to go by squeezing more ponies out of a LS2 wont be a problem. The engine is a lighter freeier breathing 6.0L V8, with a tune, exhaust and CAI will see 280rwkw plus no worries. In that respect you could say its detuned or just well engineered. The latter I think suits best.
