How about cutting the strips out on either side...?
EDIT - I mean the strips that the black parts sit on.

Hella make some nice slim-line flat fog lamps that fit there.
I just bought a pair ... not really off the shelf though ... had to look through the Hella catalogue to find them. I just need to find the time to fit them now. I think they were around the $130-$140 mark
