Default Cruise control stopped working

Hey people, the cruise in my AU2 XR6 ute (5speed) has stopped working.

I can turn the cruise on with the stalk, and the word cruise comes up on the dash, but i cannot set it with either the plus or minus button.

It started doing it intermittently, so I thought the buttons were just getting worn out, but i have replaced the steering wheel controls with brand new ones and it is still not working, not even intermittently.

What else could it be and can I fix it myself?

Thanks, Mark

Check the clutch pedal height adjustment.
If it's too close to the floor, it disables CC.

Check to see if your brake bulbs are operational.

My cruise did the same thing you describe, and I found the bulbs were blown after the tipoff from some on this forum. Apparently the highway patrol guys in the early AU days worked it out.

I replaced the blown bulbs and presto, cruise returned.

Hope it's as simple as that for you.

Another idea is that the contacts from the steering wheel to the column need cleaning. To do that you would need to remove the airbag which can be dangerous. Best to get a professional with insurance to do that :P

Check your fuses too .. I had the cruise on a BA Fairmont go on me on a trip to Tassie a few years ago. When I got home it was just a simple blown fuse. Plugged in a new one and it was all good. - Mike

I suppose a give away for the steering wheel connection is if your radio switches had also slowly stopped working...?

Greetings - start the car - hop out and check if your brake light is showing - if so then the brake switch needs replacing - about $24 - with the brake lights on the cruise control won't set - hope this helps
